Death and Resurrection in Pluto

Pluto in a nutshell is all about death and resurrection, the unknown and secrets, and cosmic purpose and destiny. But what about the moons? All of Pluto’s moons have great significance and are tied to The Underworld. Let’s dive in!
Charon – named after the ferryman that takes souls to The Underworld; he often is paid with a coin. The correspondences relating to Charon are relating to the process of a transformation, and can be invoked for assistance in said process or in helping spirits cross over. Charon can also assist in travel spells.
Hydra – named after a serpent-like monster said to reside at the entrance to The Underworld. The correspondence relating to Hydra is multiplying strength, and can be invoked for assistance in spells for personal power or protection that multiplies/strengthens with every hit.
Kerberos – named after the three-headed guard dog of The Underworld. The correspondences relating to Kerberos are protection and intimidation, and can be invoked for powerful protection spells, wards, etc.
Nix – named after the goddess of night, Nyx. The correspondences relating to Nix are the night, dreams, darkness, and intimidating feminine power, and can be invoked for nighttime magick or help finding a way in darkness. Nix can also assist in “dark” magick, a unique type of glamour magick, or magick fit to help bring about power. Styx – named after the goddess of the River Styx, aka the primary river between the Earth and Underworld. The correspondences relating to Styx are invulnerability, hatred, and strong promises, and can be invoked for invulnerability spells and curses of hatred. Styx can also be invoked for any death/cosmic witchery including the element of water.

The Moon and the Black Sacred Night

The moon was no doubt the greatest mystery to our ancestors because it changed its form monthly, endlessly returning to its original shape again. Yet even its ever-changing nature was predictable. Therefore, it was the constant inconstant light in the night sky. To add to its mystery, the moon seemingly disappeared each month into the blackness of the night sky for three nights. This isn’t unlike the idea of seeking renewal through immersion in water.
Black is one of the three colors of the Great Mysteries: Birth,
Life, and Death. Like water, black represents the formless state of
procreation and the realm of all possibilities. From the ancestral perspective, anything could be lurking in the black of night, and anything might emerge from it. When we factor in that (scientifically speaking) black is the presence of all colors mixed together, we can comprehend the essential nature of its full potentiality. The idea here is that since black contains the all, then any part of that can manifest
separately or in combinations.
The moon isn’t detached from ideas connected to the concept
of blackness. In fact, its cycle of change is well suited for such a
mystical realm in which it abides. The color black is often associated with death, and in the writings of ancient Greeks, such as Plutarch,
we find a belief that souls of the dead are drawn into the moon. The ancient sect of mystical Pythagoreans also taught a related theme.
In occult philosophy, the dead and the moon share the principle of
renewed form, which connects to the belief in reincarnation. This
suggests an occult mechanism in which the blackness of night
represents full potentiality, and the moon symbolizes the means
through which the parts of the whole are generated into manifestation.
In the old tales of Witches, the night is the favored time of their
gathering, and the preferred place is at a crossroads. We previously
noted that the place of the crossroads has long been associated with spirits of the dead, and it’s often defined as in-between the worlds.
Hecate, one of the classic goddesses associated with Witchcraft, is
intimately connected to the dead (and is said to escort them into the Underworld).
The magic of Witches belongs to the night, the moon, and the
realms hidden in the black shadowing places. The Full Moon and
its rite is the fulfillment of the covenant of the Witch who tends
the ancient ways and keeps faith with the tides of the moon. This
is because the moon represents the essence of what flows through
the mysteries embraced by the Witch. It’s enlightenment in the dark places, the cycle of transformation, and the promise of return.

How to use the Moon Phases for Spells and Magick

Ready to make your spells more powerful? Want to learn how to make your spells work faster? Use the timing of the Moon to add more energy to your spells and intentions!
For centuries, our ancestors have looked up at the sky and using what they saw for timing, healing, predicting, and adoration. When we look to our grandmothers and great grandmothers, we find that they hold a drop of knowledge leftover from the old days, when we were still connected to the Earth and Sky.
Luckily, this knowledge hasn’t been totally removed from our culture! Our Neo-Pagan and Wiccan sisters and brothers still work, live, and dance by the phase of the moon!
Here is how we use the phases of the moon for spell timing!

Luna Moon World

Luna is the purest of the Moon Worlds. It is where the Soul is taken to rest and be renewed. It is the place of eternal youth. Here there is union with the Gods and with those Strega who have gone before.

The portal to Luna is in the West, beyond the sunset and beyond the Ocean. Luna is a place of beautiful forests and meadows. A place of clear streams, rivers and lakes. Nature spirits inhabit these places as do all beautiful creatures of ancient myth and legend. In Luna it is always Summer, hence its other name of the Summerlands.

Each Soul experiences Luna in the manner which is most suited to its life experience. This is as it should be.

We must realize that the Moon is not truly the World of Luna but only a symbol. From the Physical World, and by the physical senses, you can never see or know the World of Luna.

THE MOON VISITS GEMINI

As the moon makes her way through the zodiac, she stops and visits each sign for a spell, spending a couple of days in each of their homes and with their unique energies. She is influenced by these energies, and the way she expresses herself adapts to the sign she is in.

She has been on the road for 30 days now, making her way through the entire zodiac. By the time she arrives at the sign of Gemini, she is full….a bit tired from her travels, and ready to let go of some of the baggage she has picked up along the way.

As she taps on the door of Gemini, she is greeted by the owner of the home, Mercury himself. He looks at her inquisitively, tugging on his glasses to see her better. He introduces himself, but she already knows who this god is: this traveler of the upper and lower worlds, bearer of messages, and facilitator of communications. He welcomes our moon inside and notices immediately that she is carrying quite a heavy load. He ushers her to the kitchen table and offers her a cup of tea, chatting about nothing as he prepares it. The moon looks around and is overwhelmed by the number of bookshelves this man has in his home, each overflowing with literature. Has he read them all?… she wonders. In another part of the room, she sees a display wall that contains what must be an original antique telephone, a telegraph machine, a quill pen, a computer, old letters, and…is that a fax machine? She recognizes these as the tools he has used throughout the years and comments on how beautiful they all are. Mercury looks fondly at them and says, “Thank you.”

He brings the moon her tea and takes a seat next to her at the table. “Talk to me,” he says. “Tell me what it is you are needing to let go of?” Usually more introverted and private, the moon hesitates…but there is something about being in this house with this god that makes her want to open up and tell all. So she does. She tells Mercury of her travels through the other eleven houses and how each one required her to use a different piece of her energy. She told of which ones she liked the most, where she got the most rest, and where she felt the most out of place. She shared the things that were holding her back the most and what stresses she was currently carrying. Mercury listened intently and encouraged her to continue. Once Lady Luna had said all the things she needed to, Mercury smiled, made a witty comment about how much lighter she looked already, and then set out to help her find solutions. He had been taking notes and had a plan. It was her turn to listen now as this intelligent god shared his ideas, introduced her to solutions, and re-framed her struggles.

Mercury and the Moon spent most of their time together this way, sharing and communicating with each other about everything under the sun. When she hugged Mercury goodbye a few days later, she felt like she had talked more in two days than she had all month, and she realized this was just the medicine she needed. Gemini was a retreat of a different kind, the kind that encouraged a verbal expression of her emotions and a new perspective on her path.

The moon walked away from the house of Mercury lighter, leaving behind what she had carried in, and set off to begin her retreat back into darkness.

Moon power

This spell can be performed indoors as well as outside. It is representational since you use a paper moon or flower. In the incantation the Moon is represented as a white swan. This should be done at the time of the Full Moon and is designed to bring the energy of the Moon within your grasp until the next Full Moon.

You will need:

• A BOWL OF WATER

• WHITE PAPER MOON OR FLOWER

Method:

Float the paper moon or flower in the bowl. Raise the bowl towards the Moon in the sky and say:

”Hail to thee white swan on the river.

Present life, tide turner,

Moving through the streams of life, all hail.

Mother of old and new days,

To you, through you, this night we cling to your aura.

Pure reflection, total in belief, touched by your presence,

I am in your power and wisdom.

Praise your power, your peace, my power, my peace.

I am strong. I praise. I bless.”

Replace the bowl on your altar. Stand for a few moments appreciating the power of the Moon.

This spell is purely an incantation to the Moon and is therefore very simple. It needs no other tools or techniques except a physical representation of the Moon. Water is sacred to the Moon and therefore we offer her that which belongs to her.

Moon Glyphs

In Witchcraft and magick, glyph is a term used to describe a powerful symbol that represents a person, place, or thing. When the glyph is consecrated, and/or acted upon, it can ward off psychic attack, illness, and bad luck. Most glyphs are a combination of an individual’s name and birth date. These are inscribed upon a piece of parchment with special ink and corresponding astrological symbols. The glyph is n worn for protection by the person for whom it was made.

The New Moon

The new moon is a time to take a deeper look at the – “whats”, “whys” and “hows” behind our experiences we have had with people and past situations; and if these circumstances keep coming back in cycling patterns over a time interval.

During this lunation the Sun and Moon square Uranus – the planet of awakening and reformation. The Uranian archetype assists to see patterns that hold us back from our visions. The basis of such restrictive patterns, risen out of low vibrational emotions like guilt, shame, fear etc experienced in the past, could still be concealed within, and may have transmuted themselves over a period of time in the form of insecurity, rage and self-doubt – can get revealed during this new moon. And with the highly activated Uranus energy at this time, we are called to break free from these restrictive patterns and move towards a liberated path that aligns with our calling, our joy and growth. And as the Leo vibrations are extra potent during this new moon, we are provided with a massive boost of confidence and courage to accept and embrace past situations that did not harmonize with our past expectations and desires. We are urged to look from a higher perspective and honour the learnings we received through encountering these roadblocks. We are encouraged to understand that these are part of our soul’s journey and growth, only if we are not keeping ourselves attached to these limiting blockages. The Leo archetype is teaching us that courage comes when we embrace our vulnerabilities and accept ourselves lovingly through them. The Leo energy is activating the fire of determination within us, so we can move forward and align with a bigger and brighter path that awaits us all.

This new moon is also in a harmonious transaction with Venus retrograde in Leo, which is bringing our attention to our heart’s true desires. Take this as an opportunity to let your internal guidance lead you down the right path. Pay attention to flowing insights for gaining clarity on your path.

This new moon, consciously declare to the universe that you are ready to reclaim your power – to move ahead and create your own destiny. Let your high vibrational energies align with your intentions and begin to manifest themselves on your brighter journey ahead.

Super Blue Moon

The Moon and life on Earth are directly connected. Not only does the Moon have a gravitational impact on us, but functions as the basic element that holds the Earth in its trajectory of revolution around the Sun. In the evolutionary process of life, we as humans have the most complex and sophisticated neurological system. And how stimulated, active and balanced a neurological system is, is directly related to the phases of the moon. The Moon is therefore connected with our emotions, and also with our intuitive awareness. We know, due to the Moon’s gravitational pull the oceans rise up during a Full Moon phase, and so with approximately 60% – 70% water in the human system, we also go into tides internally during this lunar phase, meaning whatever is our inner quality, it gets enhanced by the influence of the Full Moon. Thus it can be said without an iota of doubt that a Full Moon phase is an opportune time to delve deeper and introspect the hidden aspects of our emotions, underlying causes behind our thoughts and behavioral patterns. And as the Moon is also directly connected with human perception, this lunar phase is also a very supportive time for unveiling hidden talents and realising our highest potential.

The Full Moon rising on August 30th is a Super Blue Moon!

When the Moon is at the closest point to Earth during its orbit, is it known as a Super Moon. And a Blue Moon pertains to the second Full Moon occurring within a single calendar month. Approximately, in about every 10 years a Blue Moon and a Super Moon coincide on the same night. The next time this happens will be in the year 2037, which is another 14 years away.

This rare celestial phenomenon is indeed a big deal! Because these extra potent cosmic vibes are opening up tremendous possibilities of awakening and superlative transformation for each of us, right now!

Each Full Moon lines up with an astrological sign, and this Super Blue Moon is taking place in the mutable water sign of Pisces, while opposing the Sun in Virgo; and making a conjunction with Saturn – the planet of structure and Karma. At this moment we can expect heightened awareness towards our responsibilities and needed organized actions in regards to bringing balance between the emotional and materialistic layers of our being (the Water element of Pisces representing our emotions, and the Earth element of Virgo representing our material self). The more-than-usual internal higher tides are activating a magnified sense of emotional awareness within us. We are encouraged not to shun and reject our emotions. It is important to understand that if one tries to become devoid of emotions, they will invariably have more suppressed, unconscious emotions. Your emotions need to be simply seen as they are, without resistance. The moment they are resisted, they multiply at a similar vibrational frequency. If you say, ‘I don’t want this emotion’, the mind will add more related thoughts and emotions to the existing mental situation. The mind does not understand subtraction and division. That’s the nature of the mind, – it’s like a mirror that reflects, it can only add and multiply. You cannot forcefully remove anything from your mind, instead you can see any limiting thoughts and emotions as they are, accept them as impact of past occurances, and not any more a relevant part of your present or your desired future. The taskmaster Saturn is encouraging us to be honest about our emotions and our rational mind, and supporting us to bring a balance between them – to create a transformative gateway for transcending limitations. We are encouraged to practically generate thoughts that can add value to our lives. If your thoughts align with what you really care for, or passionate about, your emotions will naturally flow towards it, and with more and more projection of energy towards those thoughts (enveloped with your emotions), you will find themselves manifesting into reality.

This Super Blue Moon is a time to be honest with what you really want. What do you want to evolve into? The cosmic vibes at this time are activating our intuitive awareness in a major way with the etherial Pisces energies spreading across our atmospheric spheres; and with Mercury in retrograde on its way to form an extremely auspicious connection to Jupiter — the planet of wisdom and fortune, we can expect to find ourselves in a state of enhanced perception, thus gain more clarity. And with the Venus – Jupiter connection during this lunar phase we can discern with greater accuracy – where and how we must direct our time, thoughts, emotions and energy in order to shape our life experiences the way we want.

May this Super Blue Moon vibes guide your inner dimensions to work as a gateway to transcend limitations, and bring forth a pleasant sail towards expansive horizons.

THE MOON SIGN

In astrology, the Moon sign represents your emotional nature and reveals the inner workings of your heart and soul. It can give insight into your deepest needs, fears, and desires.

To determine your Moon sign, you need to know your exact birth time and location. Then, you can use an online birth chart calculator to generate your chart and find out which zodiac sign the Moon was in at the time of your birth.

Once you know your Moon sign, you can begin to explore what it means and how it influences your life. Each zodiac sign has a unique energy, and when the Moon is in that sign, it amplifies those qualities. For example, if your Moon sign is in Cancer, you may be more nurturing and intuitive, while a Moon in Aries may indicate a more impulsive and assertive nature.

Understanding your Moon sign can help you become more aware of your emotions, patterns, and behaviors. By learning to work with the energy of your Moon sign, you can begin to develop greater emotional intelligence and find more balance and fulfillment in your life.

Your moon sign controls your emotions so that’s what really controls

Blessed New Moon

As humans, our psychological space often dominates our extistencial presence. And as we lose conscious contact with the natural elements that are responsible for the making of our extistencial presence, the possibilities that the human system carries, get weakened.

Our physical self is essentially a combination of the five elements of Nature – Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Space. And the Earth element is the core physicality of who we are. It is the basis, and most stable of all the elements. It is the Earth element on which the other elements build on.

Along with the Earth, – the Sun and the Moon have a significant influence in the making of our life. Not only does the Moon have a gravitational impact on us, but it holds the Earth in it’s trajectory of revolution around the Sun. The cycles of the Moon are also the basis of our birth on Earth, and a New Moon is thus seen as a time for new beginnings.

The September New Moon is rising on the 14th or 15th of the month, according to different geographical locations – in the Earth sign of Virgo. And this fresh lunar cycle is urging us to bring our focus on our basic element – the Earth. The Virgo energy is reminding us that the essence of our physicality is formed by the Earth, which is the source of our very body, the core of our physicality.

What we call as our body is just a piece of the Earth. If we lose connection with the source, we are bound to get disorganized. Without a harmonious contact with the Earth, the body will slowly lose its integrity and stability. It may still survive if one has lost conscious contact with this natural element, but it loses a variety of capabilities and possibilities that the human system carries.

This New Moon, radiating the vibes of Earth sign Virgo brings us a great opportunity to begin a journey of strengthening the integrity of the Earth element in our system.

There are various methods with which this can be done.

• Touch the Earth :

–The Earth is the basis of our physical life. The more you are in touch with it, the better your physiology gets. If your hands and your bare feet are in contact with the Earth, it will harmonize the physiological process in your system. Whenever they are in contact with the Earth, the body reorganizes itself as a part of the planet. Try to spend at least a few minutes a day in the garden, barefoot, touching soil, plants or trees. This is a simple way to connect with the Earth element.

• Earthing – Getting wet and lying stretched out on Earth with face downwards :

— Soak yourself in water. You can damp-dry so that some moisture still remains. Lie down for sometime, stretched out on Earth with face downwards. When you are earthing wet, the electrical connections conduct themselves much better than otherwise. This contact with Earth energizes the entire body.

• Barefoot New Moon walks :

— A simple way to connect with the Earth is to walk barefoot, especially on a New Moon and two days prior to the New Moon day. On these days the moon’s gravity creates a certain level of inertia, and the body and its energies are much more connected with Earth than on other days, as the pull is in the same direction. By contrast, on Full Moon days, it is pulling you up in the opposite direction. If it is not feasible for you to go outside during the New Moon day, at least in your house – walk barefoot and sit on the floor, particularly cross-legged. Both bring a deep energy connection and create the experience of being connected deeply with the Earth.

• Foot embed :

— If you have a garden, dig a hole about a feet deep, put your feet inside and close the hole up, just above your ankles. Stay there for 30 to 40 minutes, simply stuck in the Earth.

• Be mindful as you eat :

— The essence of our physicality is formed by the Earth that we intake. As we eat food, we essentially take in a part of the Earth to sustain the body. One must intellectually understand this reality – that they are taking in or eating a part of the Earth for survival and sustenance. Only then can we experience the Earth as much a part of us.

• Meditate on the Earth element :

— When it comes to our energy body, the Earth element is associated with the the Root chakra located at the base of the spine. Meditating on the root chakra helps in grounding and connecting to the Earth. Crystals corresponding the Earth element like Black tourmaline, Black agate, Emarald, Garnet, Hematite, Mookaite, Jasper, Tree agate, Moss agate, Green jade etc can be incorporated during the meditation. New Moon intentions of grounding your energy, centering and stabilizing, protection of the energy field, gaining physical and mental strength, attracting wealth and beauty can also be planted well this New Moon.

Being in touch with the Earth is extremely beneficial in terms of health, wellbeing, and various spiritual practices. This New Moon let’s begin a new journey of building a consciously harmonious connection with the life-making Earth element. Let this New Moon support us to get more involved with the planet, all of us are living on, and are made of.

Magical Full Moon Water

Full moon water is a preferred ingredient in potions and teas because it is charged with the natural powers of the Moon. You can reserve it for washing your tools, herbs, and other ingredients, too. For example, I use full moon water in my tea to give it extra power.

Full Moon water is best used for perfecting ideas, working on positive energies, increasing psychic and physical energy, and enhancing creativity.

SUPPLIES:

glass bowl

spring water

clear glass container with a lid

PROCEDURE:

Pour the water in the bowl.

Place the bowl on your windowsill (but on the outer side!) or somewhere in your garden/on your balcony/wherever the Moon can shine upon it.

Now I usually say a short blessing (depends of the spell) and then I leave it until sunrise. You too can leave it overnight (until sunrise) or only for a couple of hours; it really depends on how strong you want your water to be.

The next morning filter the water muslin to remove any stuff you might have found in it.

Transfer the water in a clear glass container, close it with its lid and use the water when needed.

NOTE

if you wash your hair with the moon water, it will stimulate growth of your hair

new Moon water, on the other hand, is ideal for healing and resting spells

even if the sky is cloudy, the water still absorbs the Moon’s energy (it’s the Moon’s energy we’re collecting, not its light)

Deities Of The Moon

Invoke these for gentle increase, power and banishing energies, fertility, intuition, magick and dreams.

Arianrhod

Arianrhod is a Welsh goddess of the full moon and also of time, karma and destiny.

She ruled over the realm of the Celtic Otherworld, called Caer Feddwidd, the Fort of Carousa.

Here a mystical fountain of wine offered eternal health and youth for those who chose to spend their immortality in the Otherworld.

She brings inspiration, renewal, health and rejuvenation, and is a focus for all magick, as she is a witch goddess.

Diana

Diana is the Roman counterpart of Artemis, and because of her strong association with the Moon in all its phases, is a goddess of fertility as well as love.

Like Artemis, she is goddess of the hunt and a virgin goddess but can be invoked in her role as an Earth goddess and as protector of women in childbirth.

Her beauty and hunting skills make her a perfect focus for the pursuit of love, especially from afar.

Myesyats

Like the lunar goddesses, Myesyats, the Slavic Moon God, represented the three stages of the life cycle.

He was first worshipped as a young man until he reached maturity at the full moon.

With the waning phase, Myesyats passed through old age and died with the old moon, being reborn three days later.

As he was the restorer of life and health, parents would pray to him to take away their children’s illnesses and family sorrows.

Other sources have a female version, Myesytsa, a lovely Moon maiden who was the consort of Dazhbog the Sun God, and became mother of the stars.

Myesyats brings healing and family harmony.

Selene

Selene is the Greek goddess especially associated with the full moon, sometimes forming a triplicity with Diana and Hecate, the twin sister of Helios the Sun God.

Selene rises from the sea in her chariot drawn by white horses at night and rides high in the sky in her full moon.

At the time of the full moon, she is invoked by women for fertility and by all who seek the power of intuition and inspiration.

Astrology The moon

Whereas a circle represents spirit, the semicircle represents soul in the pictographic code of the astrological glyphs.

The Moon’s glyph is the vessel of the soul, both for its development and its journey in the Moon boat.

Of all the astrological glyphs, the Moon’s glyph most strongly resembles its counterpart in the skies.

The two sharp points created by the intersection of the two semicircles remind us of the pulsing rhythm of the Moon.

The horns of the Moon remind us of the waxing and waning, of being present in day and night, and punctuated moments of duality that resolved back into the curves of the crescent.

The Moon is the vessel of our life and contains within it the storehouse of the images, the emotions, and the memories that make up the experience of life.

The Moon is connected to instinct, how we react before we have time to think with our conscious minds.

The Moon is the author, the editor, of the story of our life.

When you look back upon your life you do not remember it as raw security camera footage.

You remember your life as a story.

This story is a summation, a distillation, of your experiences with plots and subplots and chapters.

The position of the Moon in a particular Sign and House determines the style and the genre of your life story.

The Moon is also the lower reflection of the powers of the Sun, and as such is associated with the unconscious, the subconscious, and those parts of the psyche that live in the land of dream.

In Magick, the Moon is associated with the astral plane and therefore the sphere of Yesod in the Tree of Life.

It is the realm closest to physical manifestation and the plane where most magickal work is done.

The Moon collects all the influences and then turns earthwards to create the ebb and flow of the tides of life, both physical and subtle.

A MOON WITHOUT MAGIC

Even though the Moon simply exudes magic and seemingly saturates our lives
with it whether we want Her to or not, there are approximately twelve times
every month when She is positively incapacitated. It’s as if all Her power has
been stripped away, and suddenly She seems to have no strength or energy or
magic at all. In fact, to the magical practitioner, She has no purpose whatsoever,
except, of course, to light our way through the dark of night. It’s at these times
that the Moon is said to be Void of Course.
To some folks, especially those not well versed in astrological terms, saying
that the Moon is Void of Course sounds very silly, indeed. For the fact of the
matter is that the Moon is always on course, moving steadily through each
astrological sign every month. That being the case, Her journey continues like
clockwork.
There does, however, come a time when even the Moon needs a little R &
R. She needs to kick back, relax, and regroup before moving onward, to take a
power nap, if you will. And She grabs that opportunity just before She enters the
next astrological sign.
So how do we know when the Moon is out of service, and how long do
these periods last?
Void of Course periods are usually calculated by a plethora of complicated
mathematical equations and variables that few of us truly understand. Couple
that with the fact that the length of these periods varies from several minutes to
forty-eight hours, and proper calculations could be very sketchy, indeed.
Fortunately, though, we don’t have to worry about that. An ephemeris, an
almanac, or a calendar with accurate Moon data will provide this information
right down to the minute. All we have to do is keep one handy, and we’re good to
go.
Once we have the Void of Course information for the Moon, what do we, as
magical practitioners, do with it? In a word, nothing! Fact is, all magical
operations seem to run amuck when the Moon is chilling out. It’s not that they
don’t work. They do. It’s just that they seldom work as planned. It’s as if the
Universe is suddenly confused as to the quickest route between point A and
point B, and things tend to manifest in such a way that we often wish we’d never
set them motion.
Think I’m mistaken? Then try this on for size. A former student of mine
once did an abundance ritual during a Void of Course Moon. Her first mistake,
of course, was asking for abundance instead of prosperity, for money was what
she really needed. But even though I reminded her of both problems-the
abundance issue and the Void of Course Moon-she went right on with her plans.
And what did she get for her trouble? A lot more than she bargained for!
Whole regiments of gophers, moles, and rabbits took up residence in her
garden, and what they didn’t eat away from below, huge flocks of blackbirds
gobbled up from above. Termites invaded her house. Feral cats chose her garage
as a birthing quarters. She wound up with an infestation of sand fleas that even a
case of sevin dust wouldn’t cure. But that was just the abundant contribution
from the animal world. Her troubles had just begun.
Both of her children got sick about the same time she lost her second job.
Her budget wasn’t well padded and didn’t allow for extra medical expenses. And
while she was fortunate enough to find another job, the hours were absolutely
horrendous, which meant additional child care expenses. So in the final analysis,
she was doing little more than paying for the privilege to work a second job. All
in all, it was her worst nightmare-times three.
Magical efforts aren’t the only things that go awry during this period.
Computers and peripherals act up, communications get tangled, and plans don’t
work out. A sense of stalemate is in the air, and because of it, nothing runs true
to form, not even the thinking process. This communication breakdown often
results in a temporary but unrealistic view of present circumstances. Acting on
much of anything at this time could bring very unexpected consequences,
indeed.
That having been said, it pays to follow the Moon’s lead when She’s Void of
Course. Just kick back and relax, and take a bit of well-deserved time for
yourself. Read a book, see a movie, or take a leisurely stroll through the park.
The Moon will be back on track before you know it, and because you had the
good sense to rest as well, you’ll be raring to go when She is!

OCCASIONAL MOON PHASE MAGIC

There’s more to the Moon than meets the eye, especially when it comes to
magical operations. There are only twelve months in the calendar year. However,
the Moon cycles thirteen times during that period, which means that at least two
Moon phases of the same type will appear in the same month several times each
year. When the repeated phase happens to be the Dark or New Moon, we call the
second occurrence the Black Moon.
Since the repetition of anything only serves to increase its power, the Black
Moon is very potent. It’s said to unearth mysteries with ease, pare matters down
to the bare bones, and shed light on even the most deeply hidden truths.
Therefore, the Black Moon provides an excellent time for soul searching
and inner journey work, divination, and the eradication of any self-deception.
This phase also provides a good time for drawing up plans for the future. Should
you decide to work toward a new beginning at this time, though, know that all
plans made will reflect the absolute truth, so it’s not a good idea to brush aside
your inner voice. Listen when it speaks, for while under the power of the Black
Moon, it cannot lie.
While the Black Moon is definitely important when it comes to magic,
there is another phase that many practitioners revere even more. They believe it’s
the most powerful of all Full Moon phases, and because it only transpires every
couple of years, they await its arrival with much anticipation and excitement. On
the other hand, other practitioners believe that it’s no more powerful than any
other Full Moon, but enjoy the prospect of the additional energy and opportunity
it provides for magical workings. This phase is known as the Blue Moon,’ and is
the third Full Moon to rise when four Full Moons appear within the same season.
As a magical practitioner, how you perceive this energy and where you
apply it is up to you. Remember that belief and personal perception are key
elements to magical success. So whether you work toward miracles or simply
treat this energy as that of another Full Moon, I’d suggest that you give it all
you’ve got. Why? Because it’s been my personal experience that no magicregardless of its magnitude or its triviality-has ever met with anything other than
rapid success during the Blue Moon.
Perhaps the only occasional Moon phase that never meets with a debate as
to its power is that of the Lunar Eclipse. To the nonpractitioner this may seem a
bit odd, because these eclipses happen much more frequently in the solar
calendar than the Blue Moon. In fact, they occur at least once annually, and often
two to three times within the same year.
No matter how often it occurs, though, the Lunar Eclipse is a magical event
more special than any other. For one thing, it provides a time when the energies
of the Moon and Sun connect, and this marriage of sorts brings a balance, an
equalization of the male and female polarities if you will, that puts everything
back in perspective. Because it brings the light-dark-light concept into full view,
it’s also a reminder of the birth-deathrebirth cycles, and that’s something to
which nearly all magical practitioners subscribe.
That’s not all. The Lunar Eclipse also brings an indescribable sort of energy
to everything in its path; something so strong that it goes beyond the point of all
human feeling or description. It’s an energy that not only embraces us, but fills
our very cores to overflowing-even if only for a few moments. Because of its
allencompassing power, Lunar Eclipse energy can be a bit overwhelming; so
much so, in fact, that some practitioners refuse to use its power at all in their
efforts. They say that its energy is simply too hard to control.
While I understand where they’re coming from, this simply isn’t true for me.
And it isn’t true for most of the practitioners I queried. While Lunar Eclipse
energy is definitely potent, it is not at all scattered. It’s a balanced, cohesive,
emulsification of two opposite energies. It’s a little like raw milk. Before it’s
processed, the cream becomes irrevocably separated from the milk, and try as
you may, there’s nothing you can do to make it stick to the heavier liquid. But
homogenize it and see what happens: Both substances blend together in flawless
unison, providing a much stronger and more nutritious drink. Such is the way of
the Lunar Eclipse. It homogenizes the energies and allows us to work with both
as a single unit.
That having been said, all that’s left is the decision of whether or not to use
this very special energy. I urge you to try it just once. Why? Because the energy
related to this occurrence is so powerful it can bring about events that other
Moon phases seldom manage. Simply put, Lunar Eclipse energy brings the
impossible to fruition; it can single-handedly manifest real miracles.
Keeping that in mind, I suggest saving especially difficult projects for the
Lunar Eclipse. Good ideas might include long-term goals like business ventures,
financial planning, or successful career changes, as well as efforts that require
balance, harmony, or a meeting of the minds. It’s also very potent when it comes
to developing personal shields-whether they be psychic in nature, or related to a
physical protection against poor health, theft, harm, or danger. Want an entirely
new life? This is the time to change your personal reality. Don’t discount efforts
that involve relationships, partnerships, or matters of the heart, either. However,
know that the magical effects will be extremely longlasting.

FULL MOON

The Full Moon is ruled by the Mother Goddess, and contrary to popular belief,
Her energy isn’t necessarily just a one-day affair. In fact, many practitioners
consider it to be full (and use its energy as such) for one day before the calendar
date and one day after. This is really good news magically for a couple of
reasons. For one thing, the Full Moon can be used for any effort at all, but more
importantly, the Moon’s energy peaks during this time. This means that any
effort performed during the Full Moon is not only charged to the max, but packs
a cosmic wallop when released into the Universe. Because of this, most
practitioners save this phase for handling difficult or complicated matters, or for
efforts that require an extra boost.
What about the debates on the phases of the Dark and Waxing Moons? Who’s
right? Who’s wrong? More specifically though, how should practitioners handle
the Moon phases in order to achieve the best magical success?
The fact of the matter is, like magic itself, there is no right or wrong. How
you handle the energies of these Moon phases and apply their powers is your
decision alone. Just remember that magic is designed to make your life easier,
not the other way around, so do whatever feels right for you and let it go at that.
Remember that you are the magician, the matrix from which all magic flows,
and as such, you are at the controls.

WAXING MOON

Belonging to the Light Maiden, the Waxing phase occurs when the Moon grows
in the sky from new to full, and it’s during this period that She gains power. That
means it’s a good time to perform any efforts that require an increase of sorts, or
necessitate momentum. Good candidates include spells that involve a fresh start,
increased productivity or efficiency, the addition of something to your life, a
victory or recognition of sorts, or good health and well-being. If you need more
of something, Waxing Moon energy can provide it.
Just as with the Dark Moon energy, though, things can get a bit sticky here
with some practitioners as well. Why? Because they also divide the Waxing
Moon phase into two separate portions: First Quarter Moon energy and Gibbous
Moon energy. Luckily, this isn’t nearly as magically confusing as the Dark/New
Moon debate. Simply put, they define the First Quarter energy as that which
occurs from seven to ten days after the New Moon, and they apply it to any
effort that necessitates increase. While they consider Gibbous Moon energy
(which occurs, incidentally, from ten to thirteen days after the New Moon) to be
of major magical importance, they use it primarily with only one goal in mind:
to instill the attribute of personal patience while waiting for an effort to manifest something that a magical practitioner can never have too much of!

DARK OR NEW MOON

The Dark or New Moon is frequently the subject of heated debate among
magical practitioners. So much so, in fact, that there are only three things that
practitioners seem to agree upon when it comes to this phase: 1. It occurs during
the period between the Waning and Waxing phases.
2. It belongs to the Crone.
3. Even though the Moon isn’t visible in the sky, She’s still there bathing us with
Her energy.
Because of this, the magical practices associated with this phase are as varied
and diverse as the practitioners themselves. Many folks, for example, use this
phase to rest and relax, regroup and regenerate. Others find this energy
extremely useful for delving into past lives, divinatory efforts, magical study,
and meditation. A personal favorite for Dark Moon energy, though, is truth
discovery. Nothing surpasses its energy for getting to the heart of things and
seeing them for exactly what they are.
Still others divide this phase into two parts: New Moon energy and
Crescent Moon energy. New Moon energy is afoot from the first day of the Dark
Moon to three and a half days after, and is said to be excellent for efforts
involving self-improvement, gardening, employment solutions, and health.
Crescent Moon energy picks up the slack after that, and is said to continue from
the three and a half day mark through the seventh day after the Dark Moon. And
those who work with its energy usually harness it for efforts that involve
business dealings, animals, feminine strength, a leveling of emotions, or projects
that necessitate change of some sort.
While I certainly don’t discount the strength of these two energies, or the
fact that they work well for the efforts described, I do have to admit that I have a
problem with the mathematical figures from which these phases are derived. For
one thing, the practitioner would have to consistently check an ephemeris to
determine the exact time of the Dark Moon in order to calculate the first three
and a half day period with any sort of precision. For another, the Crescent Moon
usually isn’t even visible in the sky until about five to six days after the Dark
Moon. This, of course, means that the Moon is not yet even a sliver during the
first couple of days of calculated Crescent Moon energy; thus, it is not a crescent
at all. Most important, though, is this: If the Moon is visible in the sky after the
Dark Moon, even a bit, it is growing or waxing, and the Waxing Moon does not
belong to the Crone or Her energy. Rather, it is ruled by the Light Maiden.
