Selenite, satin spar, desert rose, gypsum flower are crystal habit varieties of the mineral gypsum.

All varieties of gypsum, including selenite and alabaster, are composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate (meaning that it has two molecules of water), with the chemical formula CaSO4·2H2O.

Selenite contains no significant selenium – The similar names both derive from Greek selḗnē (σελήνη ‘Moon’)

Some of the largest crystals ever found are of selenite, the largest specimen found in the Naica Mine’s Cave of the Crystals being 12 metres long and weighing 55 tons.

History and etymology

“Selenite” is mostly synonymous with gypsum, but from the 15th century, it has named the transparent variety that occurs in crystals or crystalline masses.

The name derives through Middle English selenite from Latin selenites, ultimately from Greek selēnítēs líthos (σεληνίτης λίθος, lit. ’moon stone’).

It got this name because people historically believed the mineral waxed and waned with the cycles of the Moon.

Distinguishing characteristics

The main distinguishing characteristics of crystalline gypsum are its softness (hardness 2 on Mohs scale, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail) and its three unequal cleavages.

Other distinguishing characteristics include its crystal habits, pearly lustre, easy fusibility with loss of water, and solubility in hot dilute hydrochloric acid.

Varieties

Though sometimes grouped together as “selenite”, the four crystalline varieties have differences. General identifying descriptions of the related crystalline varieties are:

Satin spar
Most often silky and fibrous;[8] chatoyant; can exhibit some coloration
The satin spar name has also been applied to fibrous calcite (a related calcium mineral), which can be distinguished from gypsum by its greater hardness (Mohs 3), rhombohedral cleavage, and reaction with dilute hydrochloric acid.

Desert rose

It is important to keep your crystals in good condition for magick practice. Here is a guide with several ways to cleanse and charge your crystals. With Salt ~Burying a crystal in a bowl of salt, sprinkling salt around it, or sometimes soaking it in saltwater are all good ways to cleanse a crystal. Salt has natural cleansing powers and will soak up negative energy. Consider the magickal properties of salt. It’s a purifier, a cleanser, and a protector. Use it to strengthen protective, purifying, or cleansing stones. As with all methods of charging, focus on what you would like the purpose of your crystal to be. Charge your crystal with that intent.With Water ~Be careful when it comes to cleansing crystals with water, as some cannot withstand the liquid very well, but water does have cleansing properties. Consider the element Water. It is healing, emotional, loving, and gentle, and it is traditionally used as a cleanser in religious ceremonies. By soaking a stone in a bowl of water, you are washing out any negative energies. Soaking stones in saltwater is a favourite cleansing method of mine. Now, here is a list of stones you should NEVER put in water: Borates Calcite Ivory Gypsum Lapis Lazuli Pyrite Obsidian Selenite Turquoise These stones will dissolve in water.With Fire ~Here is a simple and fast spell I concocted that I found cleanses and charges crystals very quickly. Light a preferred candle. Hold your crystal above the flame, flip it over in your palm above the candle, and recite: “Fire, fire burning bright Charge this crystal with your light Fire, fire, burning bright Make it strong

with all your might.” Leave the crystal beside the candle to charge for as long as you see fit. When you are done, snuff the candle out.With Sunlight ~One of the most basic ways to charge your crystals is with sunlight. Sunlight is fiery, energetic, more masculine, and more yang. When a crystal is charging in the sun, it is imbued with the sun’s energy. This can come in handy for money spells, job spells, energy spells, and any type of spell that requires more yang energy. To charge a crystal with sunlight, simply lay it out on the window sill or someplace where it will get a good bit of sunlight, and allow itto bask there for the remainder of the day. When the sun goes down, it is done and ready to be used again. This is a good alternative for charging a crystal that can’t withstand the sun. The moon’s energy is calming, soothing, emotional, feminine, healing, and more yin. Moonlight is great for crystals that have to do with matters of the heart. Also take into consideration the phase of the moon when charging a crystal. Is it full? Is it waning? Is it new? Charging a crystal under a certain phase of the moon with imbue the crystal with that phase’s energy. With Earth ~Some witches recommend burying a crystal for a day or even a week at a time. This works especially well for earth-related crystals such as garnet. Remember that it was the earth that formed and energized these crystals in the first place, so what better way to charge a crystal than to return it back to the earth from whence it came?With a Grid ~Some stones are cleansers and chargers themselves. Selenite and obsidian are some good examples. By placing other crystals that need charging around naturally charging stones, it creates a grid. Leave these stones in place for about twenty-four hours or until the energy has returned to them. Lots of people have fun creating pretty designs with these crystalgrids, so get creative and have fun with them!With Herbs ~Adding herbs to the mix will help further strengthen and direct a crystal’s purpose. For example, placing lavender in a grid with amethyst will aid it in its purpose to calm. You can also place herbs in water if you choose to use the water method for charging crystals, or, even better, create rosewater or lavender water to use. In essence, charge whatever stone in the way you feel is best. Many witches develop a preferred method for charging their crystals, and that is fine. Genuine crystal balls are very expensive, and the best source for them is
Germany, where they’ve mined and polished clear crystal for centuries. Less costly
options include polished stones or balls made of lead crystal. The lead crystal options
often have bubbles in them, and can be found in various colors. Those bubbles can
actually aid in focusing, so the visions that appear are inside the ball, moving across the
bubble. Ann prefers crystal for its natural energy source, but you can draw visions from
anything, if you are visual with your divinations.
Before use, the crystal ball should be dedicated and charged (empowered) with an
herbal wash of mugwort, made by pouring boiling water over loose mugwort (in a tea
pot, for example), letting it cool, and then washing the crystal ball with it.
The key to scrying with a crystal ball, as well as with a mirror, is to relax. Do not
try to force a vision. Don’t strain yourself trying to see something. Visions come very
gently and subtly. Ann recommends a quiet place, or one with soothing music played
very low. A candle and incense on either side of the ball may aid in focus.
Look into the ball, try to find the center, and focus on that. If there is a bubble in
the ball, it makes it easier to find a portion of the ball to focus on. Do not let your vision
fuzz over. The objective is clear sight. It’s okay to blink, or use one eye more strongly
than the other, just retain your focus. Soon you will see the crystal ball clouding inside.
Once you see the clouding, you have several options. If you want to ask a
question, whisper it now, and watch what unfolds. If you want to see something that’s
happening in the present time, whisper what you want to see, and watch. These two
examples generally result, at first, in a kind of silent movie in your focal point. What
you’re really doing is extending your awareness. With practice you will start to pick up
on sounds, smells, and other sensations.
Another option when you see the clouding is to travel to another world. If this is
what you want to do, be prepared for the journey. For many, this feels like a falling
sensation, and it can scare them out of completing the journey. If you want to travel,
relax and go with it, you can return to your home/room/chair any time. “Fall” into the
Underworld, Otherworld, etc.
(Becca’s note: I do this in many settings, often starting in meditation, envision a
window that looks out where I want/need to go, build up energy with each breath, and
when I have enough, I let go and “fall” down through the window in my mind, into the
plane I saw on the other side of that window. And the window can be my way home
when I’m ready, if needed.)
When travelling with a crystal ball like this, the room around you becomes
dimmer and dimmer until all you see is the crystal all around you. Retain your focus
while you travel. Jerk yourself out and you’re back where you began. The only thing to
fear on this journey are your own fears. Use this tool to face those fears, expose them,
understand them, and get past them. It’s a very personal, spiritual, and cleansing
experience.
