To Protect a Newborn Baby

This spell uses crystals and symbolism. The
blue stone is reputed to bring about harmony in
relationships and to help its wearer to be true to
themselves, and to be able to openly state their
opinion. The blue bead or stone used here
should preferably of lapis lazuli, which is
considered a stone of truth and friendship.
YOU WILL NEED
Blue bead or small stone with a hole
Copal or cedar incense
White candle
Bowls of salt and water
Safety pin
METHOD
✤ Light the candle and the incense.
✤ Pass the bead and then the pin through the
candle flame, the smoke, the salt and the water.
✤ Repeat the following as many times as you
feel necessary:
Great Mother, I ask protection for [name]
That he/she may not come to harm
From forces of evil on this or any other plane.
✤ Put the bead on the safety pin and say:
Through this gift I thee implore
Keep him/her safe for evermore.
✤ Now pass the bead and safety pin three times
through the incense smoke, being aware of
the available power to protect the new
arrival.
✤ Traditionally, the gift is then pinned safely to
the baby’s shawl.
✤ Let the candle burn out

Since a newborn baby is still so close to its Creator,
only the best and highest vibrational incenses and
materials are used. Copal incense is one of the purest
and most sacred that there is. It is believed to help
open the soul and can stimulate imagination,
intuition and creativity. Cedar is used to carry
prayers to the Creator. It is used to bridge the gap
between heaven and earth and is often associated
with breaking misuse of power or powerful forces
that may be having a negative influence.

Protections and Purifications

There are many folkloric remedies for the evil
eye, ranging from painting an eye on the prow
of a boat in the Mediterranean, supposedly to
outstare the sorcerer, to passing a plate filled
with burning coals three times round the head
of the victim in India. Iron is always a good
specific against the curse of the evil eye, as also
are mirrors or glass beads, which dazzle.

By and large it is the idea of envious glances
that is the basis of the superstitions and
customs surrounding the evil eye. In Turkey,
many parents keep new babies out of public
view for forty days, lest their beauty invite a
jealous glance. In Jewish and Kabbalistic lore,
the evil eye is known as ayin harah and what
follows is a variation of a charming technique
to protect a new baby from ayin harah.

Protection Magick

Warding, banishing, shielding, binding, even hexing and cursing—these all fall under the broad title of “protection magick.” Protection magick means directing psychic energy toward self-preservation, or against those who would harm you. You can set protective boundaries around yourself, your loved ones, or your home or business.
Protection magick goes back to ancient times, when people crafted amulets to protect them from evil spirits or ill-wishers. Sacred symbols such as the cross or pentagram are often used for protection. Perhaps the most basic protection magick is to visualize a protective circle around yourself, through which no negativity can enter. Ritual tools like a pendant or spell bag can help you maintain the barrier for longer.
The best time to cast a spell of aggressive protection is on a Tuesday at noon (the day of Mars, at the Sun’s height). To cut yourself off from someone or something, aim for Saturday at midnight.
☆Apotropaic magic (from Greek αποτρέπειν “to ward off” from από- “away” and τρέπειν “to turn”) is a type of magic intended to turn away harm or evil influences, as in deflecting misfortune or averting the evil eye. Apotropaic observances may also be practiced out of vague superstition or out of tradition, as in good luck charms (perhaps some token on a charm bracelet), amulets, or gestures such as crossed fingers or knocking on wood. The Greeks made offerings to the “averting gods” (ἀποτρόπαιοι θεοί, apotropaioi theoi), chthonic deities and heroes who grant safety and deflect evil
☆Protective Energy Fields
The concept of Protective Magick is to create a protective barrier or field around ourselves, loved ones, valued objects, and the spaces where we reside. The skill of creating protective energy fields is essential to this Magickal practice. A protective barrier is what guards us and our valuables against energies that have the potential to do harm or cause disruption in our intent or flow. These fields are used in just about every aspect so get to know them well, and become good at creating them.
Although, creating a Magickal barrier is not exactly the same as locking our valuables in a safe, it can be very effective with the right focused intent. Protective Magickal barriers can make our valuables/us invisible or less desirable to harmful entities and energies.
The drawing up of a protective field or invisible Magickal barrier for the purpose of protection is sometimes called Casting Circle, and is also related to calling quarters. It is a simple process you can practice any time, whenever and where ever you might need it.
One effective method of casting a Magickal barrier is to imagine yourself enveloped in a white light. The light may start at your head and slowly works its way over your body down to your feet. As you envision this field forming around you, feel at peace and isolated from unwanted energies and influences. This practice is also effective for protecting and defining Magickal circles and work areas, hence the term casting circle.
If you would like to protect an object from it being touched or moved you can use a similar method. Envision the object enveloped in fire. Envision the object becoming extremely hot, so hot it glows like an ember. This is effective in many ways. I have to admit I have used it on many occasions to keep unwanted hands off my goods.
☆Calling Upon Magickal Entities
Magickal entities are what you might think they are. They are fairies, elves, brownies, dragons, power animals, spirits, and so on. When calling upon Magical entities for protection I recommend you only do so if you have a well-established relationship with the entity or entities.
Having a deep respect and personal knowledge of these creatures is essential in working with them. They are after all, sentient and intelligent beings who are not here to specifically serve our purposes. They may however, do your bidding out of mutual respect and adoration. Developing a solid relationship is essential in asking them for anything. They must be willing to work with you.
Once you have developed a specific relationship you will develop your own way of interacting and calling upon them for help. In fact, if your relationship is of high enough quality you may never have to ask for help because the entity will always be at your side.
☆Calling Upon Magickal Elemental Energies
I apply the same basic principles to calling on elemental energies as I do with Magickal entities. I feel you should have a very good understanding and skill level when working with outside entities and energies of any sort.
Elemental Energies are obscure. Some view elemental energy as elementals. I tend to think of them in the context of natural or nature energy. The very essence of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit, if you will. Unpredictable like the wind, volatile like fire, solid and un-moving like stone, the fluid and ever changing like water, and ambiguous like spirit.
To work with the elements you need to have a specific level of control and skill to adequately us these energies. A good example is calling upon Earth for protection. Although, Earth is strong and hard to break through, it is a slow energy and needs time to build up in order to be effective. You will need to know when and how to use the energy in order for it to be effective. Fire is also a very effective element to use for protection, but it is hard to control. Too much fire energy and you will end up burning yourself in the end… no pun intended. Okay I take it back, every pun intended.
So know what and how to work with the energy you seek to incorporate into you Magickal practice.
☆Symbols & Sigils
Dating back to the Stone Age, the drawing of symbols and sigils looks to be the oldest form of protection Magick. It is also the most widely used. Today many faiths practice this form of Magick, making it non-exclusive to Witchcraft, Paganism, or Wicca. For centuries protective symbols have been carved into a variety of items from stone to peach pits. I don’t think there is a religion or culture out there that does not have its own set of protective symbols that are worn or displayed in some way.
This Magick works through the vibrations that resonate between you, the symbol, and the universe. I will not pretend that I completely understand how it all works. What I do know is that when you give a shape, symbol, or object meaning, you also give it power. This can be as simple as drawing a Magickal symbol of protection on a piece of paper and carrying it in your pocket, or as complicated as a 6 month ritual to invoke the powers of invisibility and shape shifting.
☆Wearing Amulets & Protective Objects
To reflect the plethora of options related to Protection Magick, this Magickal art form is full of options. We are led from the ideal of Magickal symbols and sigils to how we employ their use. Of course the most common form is to wear these symbols in jewelry. If you desire you can take this practice much further. You can embroider bags and clothing with protective symbols, get your skin tattooed or shave them into your head if you like. There really is no limit when you think about it.
To give you even more possibilities you don’t have to stick with your regularly designated protection symbol. You can wear the carving of your own protective entity.
Here is an example to consider. If you have developed a relationship with Wolf and Wolf is your personal protector, wear an amulet carved in the likeness of a wolf or have an image of a wolf tattooed on your body, etc. It is possible you already do this, and perhaps you did not give it much thought.
☆Herbs, Spices & Foods
There are dozens of herbs, spices, and foods we can grab out of our pantries that will lend us a great barrier of protection. You can mix them into recipes, place them in sachets to carry with you were ever you go. Heck you can even mix them in with flower arrangements or infuse them into water to create a fragrant and beneficial room spray.
☆Categories of Protection Magic
Preventative: encourages good luck and diminishes bad luck, attracting good fortune and benevolent spirits. A core concept of any spiritual practice, requiring regular attention.
Purification: the removal of harmful/stagnant energies, a kind of magical hygiene meant to prevent the attraction or attachment of all forms of negative energy.
Sacred baths and washes, anointing with protective oils.
Saining, smudging and censing through the action of burning protective plants for their purifying and protective properties.
☆Defensive Operations
Warding: A kind of spiritual alarm system that is “set” and “tripped” when activated by undesirable forces and individuals. Can be programmed to detect specific persons, entities or forces or to act as a general sentry. These semi-conscious programmed energy forms can be created to serve a specific function, to last indefinitely or to dissipate after a pre-determined period of time.
Boundaries: They are part of all healthy relationships, both physical and ethereal. Boundaries keep us from feeling vulnerable, and give us dominion over our environments. Developing healthy boundaries in our relationships, both physical and spiritual makes both parties aware of the terms of the relationship, keeping toxic people and spirits at bay.
Physical Boundaries: are tangible parameters where protection is cast around a specific person, place or object. They take the form of protective circles, a continuous marking of a boundary or multiple points that when connected create geometric shapes.
Psychic Boundaries: Strengthening the aura and energy centers, while keeping them clear of blockages is like strengthening the immune system to protect the body from disease. This can be achieved by regular cleansing, energy work and shielding.
☆Divine, Spiritual and Magical Protection: By petitioning protective deities, guardian spirits and familiars to actively patrol and protect a person, place or object, protection can be bestowed in return for regular offerings and requests for the entity’s intervention. By gaining the protection of a spirit with greater power than the one sent against you, the offending spirit can be commanded to cease and desist. Hierarchical spirits or those of a contrasting influence can be set against one another, although this requires greater offerings.
A focal point such as an altar, spirit house or statue serve as an anchor for the entity in a particular area. These spirits can also be tied to the land itself, particular objects or organic matter such as wood or bones. These objects are the physical representations of the spirit in question, and are treated with reverence. This is a type of magical agreement that is continually renewed via ritual offerings.
The witch or magician’s own spiritual power may be employed in this way through visualization and willpower to place a protective aura around a person, place or object. The will of the caster is catalyzed through concentration and ritual, usually some physical representation of the spell such as an object or talisman bearing symbols of protection serving as the focal point.
☆Offensive Operations
These forms of protection actively seek out the perpetrator when harm is coming from a specific source, whether known or unknown. Hexing and cursing can also be considered a form of protection, utilized to neutralize the threat or distract them by creating strife and discord.
The more aggressive forms of protection magic are considered taboo by some practitioners that follow the maxim of “harm none.” However, there are some situations that call for such drastic measures.
☆Deflection/Return to Sender: similar in nature, deflection spells are preventative in the sense that they bounce back negative forces directed at the practitioner before they can hit their target. Return to Sender spells are done in retaliation to spells that have already been cast.
They combine defensive measures with offensive maneuvers. When harmful energy, intent, spells or spirits are detected they are returned to their source and sealed with the originator.
Mirror boxes, witch bottles, and witch balls are some of the protective objects kept in or near the home for the effect of protecting from harm and returning it to the sender.
☆Binding/Banishing Spells: Also used in times when protection is needed, a more assertive protection measure.
Binding is used to restrict the actions of would-be perpetrators before additional harm can be done by themselves. Binding can also be used to protect others, and even protect people from themselves. Through a physical binding with cord, nailing or tying down sympathetic magic is enacted which cuts the target off from their energy, and prevents them from manifesting harm.
Banishing is the forcible removal of harmful forces and malevolent energy or entities, which can then be sealed with the sender or neutralized in some fashion. Banishing requires the will of the practitioner, who is free of fear and doubt.
There are different levels of banishing depending on the level of severity. Simple banishing rituals may be performed on a regular basis to remove any unwanted energies as part of one’s regular devotional practice. By banishing what does not benefit us, we make room for what does.
Taking the broadest view possible, it can be said that protection spells and charms take on a variety of forms, and that these include:
shielding through spiritual invisibility
attracting good spirits who will shield you
attracting good spirits who will fight on your behalf
setting up cross-me-not barriers
reflecting back evil to the specific sender
repelling evil generally
killing or nullifying evil where it lays
☆PROTECTION SYMBOLS:
☆Pentacle (or Pentagram)
The pentacle, or five-pointed star, is probably best-known as a symbol of the Wiccan religion. This symbol has been passed down to modern Witches through the tradition of ceremonial magick. Wiccans and Pagans wear it as symbol of faith, but it is also used as a protective glyph.
The pentacle’s protective legacy probably began in medieval times. The five points were said to represent the five wounds of Christ. Early occultists saw the pentacle as a microcosm, or representation of the human being. The pentacle’s affinity with the body makes it immensely useful to the human magician. Leonardo da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man” is the most famous representation of a man’s shape drawn over the pentagram.
To contemporary Pagans, the five points of the pentagram stand for the four elements (Earth, Air, Fire, and Water) and the “fifth element” of Spirit. Placing Spirit at the top is a reminder that Spirit inhabits and presides over all forms of matter. The circle surrounding the star evokes both infinity and the aura or energy field that surrounds the body.
The pentacle has diverse magickal uses, including protection. The pentacle is a powerful reminder of a world in balance. Witches draw pentagrams in the air to banish or consecrate sacred space. Pentagram amulets are a popular choice for warding the physical and energetic bodies.
☆Solar Cross
The Solar Cross is an equal-armed cross, which may also be surmounted by a circle. It is one of the oldest spiritual symbols in existence, dating back to Stone Age carvings.
The Solar Cross represents the light and movement of the sun. The sun was extremely important to early humans, both for its life-giving energy and its predictable cycles of days and seasons. Many subsequent religious symbols (including the Christian cross) are related to this simplest of drawings. Many more mytho-spiritual concepts can be found therein: The Celtic-Pagan Wheel of the Year, the Wheel card of the Tarot, the classical Sun Chariot, and the Native American Four Winds are just a few.
As a protective symbol, the Solar Cross evokes the power of the Sun God or All-Father, as well as the guardians of the Four Directions. To meditate on the cross’s intersection is a powerful centering exercise.
The Solar Cross represents both balance (at its center) and infinity (at its extremities). It it a symbol of eternity that embodies themes of birth, death, and rebirth. Use the Solar Cross as a centering and calming aid when under threat. As a solar symbol, it is used to banish negativity and cast out shadows.
☆Mars Sign
Named for the Roman god of war, the planet Mars is big, red, and brutal. Astrologers and alchemists developed the Mars symbol as a shorthand for the planet. In magick, it stands for all things martial: Conflict, personal power, and virility.
Mars magick includes protection spells of the more aggressive variety. Mars brings its warrior energy to curses, hexes, banishing, and counter-magick. This is not a glyph for your “white light” or “live and let live” shielding magick. Evoke Mars when you want to stick it to someone who’s bothering you (and make sure they think twice about doing it again).
☆Hamsa
This hand-shaped amulet is popular throughout the Middle East and Africa. Hamsas are worn as jewelry and hung over walls and windows. With its all-seeing eye in the center of the palm, the Hamsa is said to ward off the Evil Eye. The open right hand represents power and blessings.
In the Middle East, the Hamsa tradition is known by Jews and Muslims alike. However, the right hand of protection can be traced as far back as the Mesopotamian cult of Ishtar. Modern Witches sometimes say that the palm stands for protection, while the fingers represent the five blessings: Love, Money, Health, Wisdom, and Power.
There are many variations of the Hamsa symbol, from simple line drawings of the five fingers to the very elaborate and stylized versions. It is a very common practice to personalize the amulet with words and symbols of power. A custom Hamsa charm can be as specific as you want it to be. Or, use it as a general charm against ill luck, jealousy, and poverty.
☆Eye of Horus
The Eye of Horus (or Eye of Ra) is one of the most enduring protective symbols in history. Featured in ancient Egyptian amulets and artwork, it symbolizes divine power. The All-Seeing Eye is said to protect anything it looks upon. The shapes within the Eye have links to sacred geometry and sacred mathematics.
Through the myths of Ra (the Sun God) the Eye represents eternal life and rebirth—hence its use in Egyptian tomb decorations. It is also popular as an amulet against evil-doers and ill-wishers.
☆Triquetra
The Triquetra (or Celtic Shield) is sometimes used as a protective symbol by Pagans and Celtic Christians. The three-cornered knot represents the Triple Goddess or Holy Trinity. As it has no beginning and no end, the interwoven knot stand for protection that cannot be broken. The circle is also a symbol of eternity.
☆Bindrune
A bindrune is a sigil composed of one or more archaic letters (runes). The bindrune combines the properties of each rune into a single symbol. Bindrunes may be created for any magickal purpose, but they are commonly used in protective charms.
The most effective bindrune is one that you assemble with intention, using your own understanding of and relationship with the runes. The bindrune’s exact meaning will be known only to you. Afterward, the bindrune is worn as an amulet or incorporated into sigil magick.
The picture is an example of a protective bindrune incorporating the runes Ingwaz (harmony) and Isa (solitude). It is meant to confer a peaceful environment and inner strength upon the wearer. Also hidden within the bindrune are the shapes of Algiz (divine protection) and Othala (birthright), in case the two main runes are not enough for the job!
☆Hexagram of Solomon
The six-pointed star is an important esoteric and religious symbol. It is composed of two interlaced or interlocking triangles. Ceremonial magicians know it as the Hexagram of Solomon or Seal of Solomon.
Mystical interpretations of the hexagram are many, and depend upon who is viewing it. Western occultists see a fire (upright) triangle superimposed over a water (inverted triangle). This represents the spiritual fire of the aspirant reaching upwards towards heaven, while the fluid grace of God descends simultaneously. The interlocking triangles can be seen as a kind of shorthand for the Hermetic axiom, “As above, so below”.
The symbol is named for the Biblical king Solomon, who was said to practice spirit evocation with the aid of a signet ring with a hexagram seal. Later, medieval occultists would seek to replicate Solomon’s mastery over unruly spirits. The hexagram was said to represent the authority of God and to offer the wearer protection from evil. It is often inscribed with divine names and other symbols and words of power.
☆Crossed Spears
Sometimes the best magickal symbols are the simplest. There is no mistaking the meaning of the crossed spears. A simple line drawing easily conveys the message, “Do not pass.” This type of sigil is often used within folk magick traditions, where a lack of formal literacy is no obstacle to crafting powerful spells. Drawings of axes, swords, hammers, and shields may also be deployed for power and protection.
Variations of the crossed spears motif appear in many cultures and time periods, from British heraldry to the national flag of Kenya. It is also one of the eight Witches’ Runes. In divination, it signifies quarrels and conflict. In magick, the Crossed Spears emblem (and its cousins) are used to put up a psychic barrier or block the actions of an adversary.
☆BASIC PROTECTION TIPS
There are several actions, behaviors, techniques, and tools you can use to help protect yourself from negative energy and intentional attacks. They may be as elaborate as a full-blown ritual or as simple as putting a gargoyle out as a family guardian. The following are some ideas and suggestions to help you find what will work best for you and your needs.
Shower daily. This should go without saying for physical hygiene purposes. Try to take your showers at night (or both morning and night) to wash away negative energy you have accumulated while out and about. You will find going to bed much easier.
Create a shield. Imagine yourself surrounded by a sphere of white light (another version is to imagine a “rainbow rain” that pours through the top of your head, to the bottom of your feet, and moves back up to repeat the process) around you. This shield will protect you from harm and deflect negative energy sent your way. Keep in mind however, that you do not want to shield yourself from everything. There are positive experiences out in the world. You are protecting yourself from harm, not building a fortress in which to lock yourself in.
Be confident. You can protect yourself. We (even those of us who are seasoned in this area) all get caught off guard from time to time. You can cleanse yourself and stop the negativity from returning. You can get through hard times and you can create the future you desire. In intentional attacks, loss of confidence is often the primary or one of several goals against you. Standing your ground is best.
Use stones. Keep protective stones in at least one corner of every room to protect your house. Black tourmaline is a favorite for this purpose as it is both protective and absorbs any negativity in the area. This will make spiritual cleansing much easier.
Exercise regularly and eat healthy. As with showering, these should go without saying. A healthy body leads to healthy energy. In the same way you need a healthy body to help fight back when germs and disease try to find their way in, you need a healthy body to use magick effectively when fighting off negative energy and intentions. A healthier you is a more powerful you.
Ward your home, vehicle, and other spaces. Doing so will not 100% guarantee nothing bad will happen or that negativity will always be averted, but it is a great protective measure. Think of it as loading up on Vitamin C during cold and flu seasons. You will boost your immune system, but you may still catch a cold. Ways to ward include hanging a protective wreath on doors or broom over the threshold.
Other symbols and tools for protection. Gargoyles, horseshoes, and certain symbols all work great in protecting the home. Symbols may include the pentacle, Star of David, ankh, Eye of Horus, triskele, Thor’s Hammer, and any variation of a cross. Some witches also make use of the pentacles from the Key of Solomon.Whatever symbol you choose to use, make sure it is something that resonates with you as a protective device. If you are Christian, for example, you may find a simple cross is far more effective than the most elaborate of pentacles. Do not feel that a pentacle must be used because some spell book said that is the symbol to use to protect yourself. Use what makes you feel safe and protected and brings you the confidence you need to fight back against any attacks.
¤PROTECTIVE SPELLS AND CHARMS:
How to Make a Witch Bottle
Witch Bottles have been around for hundreds of years and have been found all over Britain. The original purpose of a witch bottle was to keep witches and evil away! It was the idea of sympathetic magic that made people think that making these bottles would work. They were suppose to protect the person from the witch or evil, while also bringing on harm caused by all the objects in the bottle. Today the purpose of the witch bottle is to protect a person from negative energy targeted at them. Objects like rusty nails, razors, pins, thorns, urine and hair from the person being protected, blood, and other sharp and nasty things went into the bottle. This is a simple way to make and use a witch bottle for general protection.

Supplies:

A glass or ceramic jar or bottle, with a big enough iopening to put the objects in it
pins
razors
thorns
ashes
glass
burrs
needles
wood pieces
hair, fingernails or blood
rusty nails
protection herbs
vinegar
urine
any other sharp or nasty object that would divert negative energy

First place all the items in your bottle. With each object, visualize the bottle being infused with protective energy. Know that any negative energy directed towards you will be absorbed and destroyed by the bottle. You could also write on a tiny piece of paper all the things you want to be protected from and stick it inside. The last items you add would be the blood (menstrual blood could be used) urine, vinegar or hair and nails (urine and blood symbolize yourself, they connect you to the bottle, they are a really strong element to work with in magic). Lastly seal the top (you can drip black candle wax over it, or just close the lid). Now you should bury it somewhere outside or in your home. These bottles have been found under floor boards, in walls, under the porch, in fireplaces and buried outside. Wherever is most convenient for you.

As long as the bottle stays intact and doesn’t break, it will work.

Witch bottles can also be constructed in other ways and for other purposes. Just think of it as a spell in a bottle. To draw money you would add things like coins, herbs to bring money, dollar signs made of cloth, and any other thing you can think of to symbolize money. You could also add those other things, like blood or hair to tie the bottle to yourself.
¤Make an Onion Braid
This is a simple protection charm to hang in your home to protect those who live there. Braiding is a very relaxing and magical way to spend an evening, and by braiding your onions, you can prepare them for winter storage – basically, you’re accomplishing the magical and the mundane all in one shot. To do this, you’ll need a bunch of onions with the green tops still attached, and about four feet of heavy twine. Begin folding the twine in half, and tying a knot near the end, creating a loop. Lay the twine on a flat surface and place an onion upside down so that the greens of the onion form a third “string”, along with the two free ends of the twine.
Using the two free lengths of twine and the onion stem, form a tight braid. Repeat this until the onion is securely in place. Repeat the process with the rest of your onions, braiding them in and out between the other stems and the two strands of twine. As you do so, focus your intent. Onions are magically linked to protective magic, so you can braid the onions and recite an incantation linking them to whatever sort of protection you feel you need. Some sample incantations might be:
For protection of a home:
Onions wrapped around a braid,
This charm for my home I have made,
Keep negative energy away from me,
As I will, so it shall be.
For protection of a person:
Layers and layers of onion skin,
Layers of safety for those within,
Layers to make all harm stay out,
Keep (name) safe, without a doubt.
PROTECTION CRYSTALS
Use crystals or stones with magical properties, such as Hematite to create a barrier around your home. Put a piece of Hematite at each outside corner of the house. Other protective stones you can use include amber, carnelian, and onyx.
PROTECTION OIL
Brew up some Protection Oil, and anoint yourself with it. This will keep you safe from psychic or magical attacks. This magical blend that includes lavender and mugwort can be used around your home and property, your car, or on people whom you wish to protect.
To make Protection Oil, use 1/8 Cup base oil of your choice. Add the following:
4 drops Patchouli
3 drops Lavender
1 drop Mugwort
1 drop Hyssop
As you blend the oils, visualize your intent, and take in the aroma. Know that this oil is sacred and magical. Label, date, and store in a cool, dark place.
☆PROTECTIVE HERBS
Plant herbs with protective properties, such as violet, thistle, honeysuckle, or fennel around your home. When they bloom, harvest them and hang them up to dry. Use the dried herbs in protective sachets or incense.
☆IRON AS PROTECTION
Hang an iron horseshoe, open end facing down, to keep evil spirits out of your home. A horseshoe found along the side of a road was particularly powerful, and was known to provide protection against disease. In some areas, the horseshoe is displayed with the open side at the top, to contain good fortune. If you have access to iron railroad spikes or nails, pound them into the soil surrounding your property to form a metaphysical barrier – just be sure you get them all the way into the dirt, so you don’t stub a toe on them later!
☆MORE PROTECTIVE CHARMS AND SPELLS
Make a batch of Black Salt to sprinkle around your property for protection.
In western Scotland, it was once popular to make a small cross of rowan twigs and bind them together with red string. Hanging this in the window or over a door will keep negative influences from crossing the threshold.
If you’re suffering from bad dreams, consider making an Herbal Dream Pillow to protect you in your sleep.Make a magical poppet to protect yourself or a loved one.
¤MIRROR SPELL TO SEND BACK NEGATIVITY
Tools needed:
* Mirror
First, bless and consecrate the mirror to be used only in positive magick.
In quiet meditation, on your altar, repeat:
“Mirror, Mirror, do as I say,
Turn all negativity back away.
Send it back from where it did come,
Send it back, an it harm none!
So mote it be!”
¤WHITE MAGIC: BANISHING SPELL
WHITE MAGIC SPELL FOR BREAKING WITH THE PAST
Purpose
To cut the link with your past, which influences your present life in a negative way.
Background
There are some experiences in our life, which are still haunting us and therefore could be for us harmful, could influence our life in a negative way. It could be for example memory of bad relationship, unhappy childhood, trauma from some life situation or some accident. This spell has two levels: magical (we influence energy flow, we cut our links with the past and it cannot reach us anymore) and therapeutic (we define our problem, accept it and let it go).
What you will need
1. A charcoal disk and a fireproof dish
2. Incense mix used in a church (for purification)
3. Matches or lighter
4. Chalk or salt for the magic circle
5. One dark blue candle (representing deep mind or unconscious mind)
6. A black cord (length 21cm)
7. Scissors
8. Another fireproof dish for burning (for example old pot)
9. A list with past experiences (we have worked with for 28 days)
If you like Tarot, you can use the card Death as a symbol for your ritual. It will symbolise the end of your suffering. Death must come first in order to start again, this “death” will clear a new path for you.
Best time
Dark moon (or dead moon), best day is Saturday, but any other day is also ok.
Preparation for the ritual
– write a list of past experiences you would like to break with. Best time to do it is one day after dark moon. You will work then every day, that means 28 days, with your list. This will accumulate enough power for the final ritual.
– every day, say to the each of the experience: “ I accept you as you are. Thank you for lesson you gave me. From now, you have no power over me. You are free and I am free, too. Goodbye.”
– you don’t have to really feel it first, most probably you will feel resistance to do it. But do it, just mechanically. Think about relief which will be your reward!
– do it till the day of the dark moon. Then, you will perform the ritual and after the ritual you will burn your list and put ashes to the flowing water.
Ritual Instructions
1. Cast a circle, to mark a circle, use chalk or salt (you can find instructions for magical circle here)
2. Light the charcoal disc and the candle. Say: “ Where was a darkness, there is now the light”.
3. Put the incense onto the charcoal. Relax and feel how the smoke purifies the atmosphere.
4. Tie a knot on the left side of the cord- it represents your past. Tie another knot on the right side of the cord. It represents your future free from experiences of the past.
5. Ask higher power of light and love to come and assist you.
6. There are two options, how to cut the connection between past and future. First one is to hold “past” in your left hand, “future” in your right hand and let the flame to burn through the cord. Another option is to cut the connection between past and future with the scissors. Choose, what “feels” better for you.
7. After that, put the past knot together with the paper (your list) into the fireproof dish and let it burn entirely.
8. Sit, relax, meditate. Pray to the Higher power. Thank this Power for help.
9. End the ritual. Then, go to the nature and put the ashes into the flowing water. Or go to the hill and let the wind to take it away.

Simple Protection

You will need the following items for this spell:

None
First, centering, grounding, meditation and shielding are recommended, but not required, though they will yield better results. Second, be still, focus on the energies around you and chant:

“God and Goddess hear my plea,
I ask that you protect me.
Give me love and give me life,
Let me not be led to strife.
God and Goddess hear my plea,
Love to all and blessed be.”

Repeat as many times as you like, or until you feel uplifted or secure.

Cinnamon Spell First of the Month for Prosperity and Protection

Did you know that cinnamon in your witch’s cabinet is super useful and super powerful? We’ve written an entire article on the magical and medicinal properties of cinnamon here, if you’d like to dive deep into this exotic spice. But, either way, it’s a boon for you to learn how to cast a simple cinnamon spell for the first of the month to bring prosperity and protection to you and your household. You might have even seen this spell on TikTok or IG…so let’s get to witchin’!

First, Why cast spells on the First of the Month?
There was a big trend on TikTok recently where people were focusing hardcore on spells cast on the first of the month. Why is the first of the month important in spellcasting? Truly, we can look at the first day of the month as being the door to the rest of the month. If we cast spells for prosperity and protection on this day, it starts us out on the “right foot” on this month’s journey, doesn’t it? Keeping in mind, if you somehow miss casting your cinnamon spell on the first of the month, there’s no need to panic! You can also perform your spells on a New Moon which is the first moon phase in a lunar cycle and an important night that offers new opportunity and a fresh start.

Cinnamon’s Magical and Healing Powers
Cinnamon has LOADS of spiritual and medicinal power. It’s typically used in spells for prosperity, protection, healing, good luck, love and lust, purification, career and business success. And its medicinal properties include immune support, endocrine system support, neurological and cardiovascular health, as well as being an anti-inflammatory and coagulant.

BLOW Cinnamon Spell First of the Month
I’m not being naughty here. But this might be the most down and dirty, easy and effective spell you’ve ever cast. So, on the first of the month (or on the New Moon) you’re going to…

Here’s what you’ll need:
A handful of powdered cinnamon
A broom
Your front door

Here’s how to cast this cinnamon spell first of the month:
Go to your front door with your intention in your mind. You can state it out loud, chant it, sing it, etc. (I say something like prosperity flows to me and my family freely.)
Open your front door and go outside. Face the front door.
Pour the cinnamon into your dominant hand (whatever hand you write with or make magick with.)
State your intentions again.
Then blow the cinnamon into your front door.
This might create a mess. What I like to do is leave the cinnamon where it lays for the day, if you can, then sweep it up and spread it across the front door’s threshold.
Say, “so be it” or “so it is done”, etc.
Watch the success and prosperity roll in!

Another SIMPLE, Yummy Cinnamon Spell for the First of the Month
I’ve found cinnamon to be the easiest and most powerful amplifier for nearly any intention in my life. Another cinnamon spell for the first of the month that’s simple and strong, and specifically works well for protection over yourself and your family goes like this:

Here’s what you’ll need:
Stockpot
Red sauce ingredients
Powdered cinnamon (about 1 tsp per 16 oz red sauce)

How to cast this cinnamon spell for protection:
Gather your stockpot and ingredients.
Chop your veggies and prepare any meat you might be using for your red sauce.
Brown your veggies and meat, then add the red sauce and wet ingredients.
Next, visualize and claim protection over this pot of red sauce and sprinkle your teaspoon (+) over your red sauce. Say, “cinnamon strong, cinnamon great. Protect my family with each and every plate.”
Stir the cinnamo into your red sauce. Then eat and enjoy!
NOTE: to some people, adding cinnamon to red sauce sounds crazy or gross. I assure you, if you don’t over-do the cinnamon, it’s a perfect ingredient. Why? Because a. it provides spiritual protection to you and your family. And b. because it cuts out some of the acidity of the tomatoes in the sauce…creating a semi-sweet undernote. And who doesn’t love red sauce in a cinnamon spell on the first of the month? Conversely, you can cast this spell ANY time and it is also powerful when cast on a New or Full Moon.

Other Ways to Use Cinnamon in Spells for First of the Month
Cinnamon is one of those extremely versatile spices/herbs that most witches use in multiple meals, desserts, drinks and magical concoctions. Here are a few more ways to get the most out of the magical properties of cinnamon (particularly if you’re making magick on the first of the month):

Mix cinnamon into your coffee or tea in the morning to amplify your shields and be successful in your day
Add cinnamon to your baked goods or bake something focused on cinnamon flavor like snickerdoodle cookies or cinnamon rolls (both bring prosperity and strength)
Infuse cinnamon into a front door wash and wash your front door down while stating your intentions of shielding your home and bringing in money
In the Fall and Winter months, make a big pot of mulled wine or cider and add cinnamon sticks to it
Decorate wreaths and garland with cinnamon sticks in the Winter and Autumn to honor the sabbats and draw prosperity
Offer cinnamon to specific deities associated with this spice including: Aphrodite, Dionysus, Venus, Eris, Hermes, Jupiter, Zeus, Ra, Apollo, Lugh, Sol, etc.
Mix into your protection powders and sprinkle across thresholds and windowsills to ward negative energy and spirits
Sprinkle over cereal or oatmeal or shakes to start your first day out right

Key Magic, Myth and a Lock & Key Spell for Protection

Keys are a worldwide symbol of good luck and new opportunities. They open doors to new worlds, new faces, and fresh beginnings. They also lock doors and protect us from taking certain destructive paths and protect us from intruders. Keys have been a part of folklore and magic for centuries. Let’s explore the importance of key magic and how to incorporate keys into our spiritual and magical practices.

Magical Keys of the Gods
Certain gods and goddesses are known to be key-bearers. We see them wearing keys on their belts or around their necks. Or they’re known by their culture for opening doors and pathways for those who ask them. Hecate is an ancient Greek goddess of witchcraft, the life/death cycle, and of the crossroads. She’s known as Lady of the Keys and is said to be the goddess who opens the doors/portals to the spirit world. Berchta, an ancient Celtic alpine goddess, wears a set of three golden keys on her belt. She is a psychopomp, escorting the souls of children to the other side, and therefore carries keys to the spirit realm just like Hecate. Truly any liminal deity bears keys of some kind, including: Minerva, Hermes, Papa Legba, and Ellegua.

Menshen: God of Doors and Keys
The Chinese God Menshen is a god of doors and gates and therefore presides over keys as well as bears them. Being that Menshen is a threshold deity, he is also a liminal deity. He guards doors that are portals to other places and in the spirit realm are portals to other worlds. When his presence is in a home, he holds the keys that lock your door from intruders or opens it to loved ones.

Key magic is ancient and powerful.
An elaborate lock, doorknob and door knocker on a Medieval door.
Medieval Iron, Blacksmiths, and Church Key Magic
In modern times, it seems we’ve forgotten the magic of small contraptions like locks and keys. But imagine what our ancient ancestors endured before the invention of locks and keys! There was once a time when people didn’t have locks and keys or even heavy doors to protect their homes from outside threats. We know that keys and locks existed as early as four thousand years ago, whence began their magic.

Protective Iron and Sacred Blacksmiths
In Medieval times, locks and keys were made from iron, which in and of itself had protective properties. Iron was believed to ward off evil spirits and dark magic, which is why locks and keys were made of it. Spirits can get through small spaces like locks but not if those locks are made of iron! This is why blacksmiths were considered magical people: they made things with iron! They forged protective magic with their hands, tools and fire.

Magical Church Keys
If we look at Medieval locks, we see how important they were. They were iron but also decorated or forged with symbols like dragons and lions. This added extra protection to the keyhole/lock from evil spirits. Some old churches in Europe still bear their Medieval iron locks and keys. Old lore says church keys were especially powerful in that they held healing properties. To pour water through a church key and let a sick child drink it meant healing was inevitable. It was an honor to be trusted with the keys to a church or any important building just as it’s modern tradition to grant the mayor the “keys to the city”.

The Keys of King Solomon
King Solomon is said to be one of the greatest sorcerers of all time. He commanded a whole host of celestial spirits like angels, demons and djinn. The Key of Solomon is a grimoire written in the fourteenth century that’s attributed to King Solomon’s magic. The “key” in this regard is representative of Solomon’s magical abilities and spells to open doors to the spirit or celestial realms.

The Key as a Female Symbol
The key as a symbol is seen in nearly every culture. In ancient Norse culture, the key was a symbol of female power. Women were given the keys to the household and therefore became the key-bearer of the family. It was an honor and tradition. She wore the keys on a belt or cord along with other sacred tools like a knife and sewing tools. Beccause of the association between keys and women, keys have been used in the childbirthing process. To place keys under a laboring woman’s bed aids her delivery. To learn more about the lore and power of keys in history visit historicallocks.com.

There are so many ways to use keys in your practice!
Simple Ways to Do Key Magic:
Old keys always call to me. Any time I’ve found them at a thrift store or yard sale, I pick them up and keep them. There’s a reason keys are so powerful. In addition to using keys as offerings to your ancestors and liminal gods, they can be used in your craft easily in these ways:

Worn around your neck as a good luck charm
Hung above an ancestor altar as “keys to the other realm”

Fairy Protection Explained

Fairy protection is sometimes necessary. If you are a friend of the fay like me, you’ve seen their beauty and wonder. They might have helped your garden grow or give you a healing remedy in your dreams. You’ve seen the good that fairies do for Mother Earth; however, every once in a while you may run into a fairy that’s not so nice. The reasons for their distrust towards us are many-fold, but the main thing is to learn how to protect yourself from trickster fairies.

First, Are There Really “Evil Fairies”?
Well, are there really bad spirits? Bad human beings? When you start working with the fairy realm, you’ll quickly realize not all fairies are friendly to humans. In fact, there are some that kidnap and eat humans according to folklore. While others may not be particularly cannibalistic but have a tendency to play tricks on their human encounters. In addition, there are household fairies that may first be friendly and helpful that turn malevolent or angry for one reason or another. There are even fairies, namely the will o’ the wisp, that are known to lead human beings off a cliff and to their tragic end.

But, to answer the question are there evil fairies, understand the faery realm follows its own rules. So what we find “evil” isn’t one thing or another in the faery realm. Still, there are some who enjoy working and living alongside human kind. Learn more about the types of fairies here. So that you’ll be aware and be able to discern between them.

Protection from evil fairies may be as simple as a loud bell or wind chimes.

Fairy Protection: 9 Ways to Protect Your Home & Yourself
Fairy protection dates back thousands of years and consists of many different practices. If you are working with fairies in your magickal practice or trying to attract them to your home or garden, these methods of protection should not scare the benevolent fairies away. These methods of fairy protection should only keep potentially malevolent fairies from your home, as long as your intention is pure.

1. Iron Protection from Malevolent Fairies
It’s been said for centuries that fairies fear iron, hang an iron horseshoe above your front door to ward off evil fairies. This belief could be due to the idea that fairies were originally a small neolithic people who lived in Ireland and were driven out of their homes by the Celts, specifically in the Iron Age (hence the fear of iron – iron weapons). Cast iron in the kitchen protects from trickster fae spoiling or overturning food. Wearing an iron troll cross, like the kind they wear in Sweden, wards off evil elves, trolls and the like. Or hang iron troll crosses around the home and garden.

2. Bells and Chimes
Bells frightened off evil spirits in Medieval Ireland and elsewhere in Europe. Specifically the big, deep-sounding Church bells that would ring to draw the people to Church. Apply this tradition by hanging deep-toned chimes on your front porch, or by using deep sounding bells during magickal ritual. Use bells to clear your space should there be trickster spirits about.

Mushroom rings could be fairy rings.

3. Protection from Fairy Raids and Rings
If going out walking at night or during twilight hours, or if you go out on one of the eight holy days, it’s imperative to protect yourself from getting caught up in one of the fairies raides (rides) or fairy rings. Old Irish folklore says that one is to turn their coat inside out to keep from being “pixie-led” away from a safe path. Also, NEVER take food from the fay! If you are caught in a fairy ride or ring, or if you take food from the fay, you could very well find yourself lost in a strange place. When you return, YEARS could have gone by even though it only felt like minutes (according to folklore).

4. Don’t Traipse Into Their Territory
The easiest way to prevent getting caught in a fairy raid or being dragged to the depths of a pond is fairly simple. Stay out of their way. Stay out of their territory. Most people can feel when they’re teetering closely to the Otherworld or a company of fairies. You’ll hear harp or flute music, seemingly far away yet close by. And the world around you will seem to shift. Or feel unstable. There are sometimes known fairy haunts in certain places throughout the world. It’s best to leave these places alone. If you happen to enter their territory unbeknownst to you, tell them you mean no harm and leave promptly.

5. Appeasing the Fay
Leave a pail of fresh milk, butter, or cream outside of your front door on the eight holy days to appease the fay and keep them from wreaking havoc on garden and home. Leaving fairy offerings and libations dates back hundreds of years, and if you have any Celtic ancestors, you probably have ancestors who partook in this tradition. Some people in Europe still do! This is a preventative method of protection from trickster fairies. Make them happy at the back door so they don’t intrude. Fairies are also particularly active in the days leading up to Samhain and during the Twelve Days of Yule.

Just because a fairy looks pretty or dainty doesn’t mean he/she can’t be malevolent!

6. Fairy Protection: The Circle of Light
Another effective yet simple technique of fairy protection consists of using one’s mind and energy. If you are used to using visualization in your meditations, rituals, and spells, this method of fairy protection should be familiar to you. It’s what I like to call the Circle of Light. You can do this visualization exercise any time of the day, any day of the week and as often as you’d like. For me particularly, I do it every night as I’m lying in bed and before I go to sleep to continue to build the circle’s strength around my home.

Just relax your entire body. Let all thoughts and chatter of your mind fade away until all you picture is a blank screen. Then see your home and property on the screen, see its colors and details. Focus on the image of your home and property, then look into the window at yourself and/or your family members. Then gradually picture a circle of white light engulfing your home, starting from the ground and going up and over, forming a dome of light. See this light as being transparent, but totally impenetrable by negative forces. Picture a branch or rock being thrown at the dome of light and watch it bounce off. Then picture an evil fairy trying to cross the circle of light’s boundary and watch them be pushed away. Repeat this visualization technique every night for at least a week, and then repeat whenever you feel necessary.

7. Ancestral and Deity Protection from Malevolent Fairies
One of the MOST effective forms of protection against trickster fairies (and other spirits in general) is to invite your ancestors and gods into your home. Once your guides and guardians take up residence in your home, they do most of the work of keeping out negative forces like malevolent fairies and the like. In fact, my ancestors are SO good at protection, I have to ask their permission to allow any other spirits inside the home.

8. Warding Your Property
Warding your property is an effective way to shield yourself and your family from pretty much every spirit you don’t want intruding. Except the ones you invite in. This is an effective way to ward off malevolent fairies, as well. I recommend reading our article on warding here. But, essentially, a circle of salt will ward off fairies, railroad spikes in the four corners of your property, as well as certain stones that contain iron like hematite and red jasper. Another tip – if you choose to use a circle of salt, Himalayan pink salt is even more effective than regular. Why? It has the largest amount of iron…which is actually what gives it its pink color.

9. Avoiding Travel On Their Days
It’s well-known through Ireland and other old countries that the fae are more active on certain days, nights and holidays during the year. Some of those days include the high Celtic holy days Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh and Samhain. But if you travel further Northeast in Europe to Norway and Sweden, the elves are quite active during the Winter holidays of Yule and during the 12 days of Christmas. And no, I don’t necessarily mean Santa’s cute, toy-making elves. I’m talking the danger, sometimes malevolent alfar. During these days, it’s best to avoid traveling on roads by yourself during twilight hours and at night. Lest you stumble upon them and be swept away.

Protection Formula

Make a spray of salt, water, vinegar, and herbs you associate with protection (I use pepper, lemon, and rosemary- though I do recommend a variation of Thieves oil, if you’re interested in also cutting down on germs and such) to use when cleaning to add a magical boost to protecting your home.

• Through many of us don’t have the traditional old school hearth setup, I like to light a candle to symbolize the hearth fire burning in my home. I use this ritual to honor my gods and their presence in my home. This also helps me feel connected to the hearth fires of old and to all those who came before me, allowing me to be here.

• Timing your chores with moon cycles can be an effective way to get witchy and remember to actually do certain chores, which we all forget from time to time (no? Just me? Alright then.)

• Enchanting your throws, blankets, and miscellaneous comfy things to be loving, comforting, and reassuring for those who need it is always a nice touch.

• Making a charm for a healthy, happy, and protected home! I made a little witch ball out of a plastic Christmas ornament and some items that matched my intent and it’s been good.

• Don’t underestimate the magical nature of mundane chores. Sweeping? I like to visualize that I’m sweeping out all of the gross energy and vibes along with the grime. Vacuuming? Same deal. Airing out the house? Inviting in clear and flowing energy. As long as you make it meaningful, it is.

• If you’re into home decor, switching out wreathes and interior decorations is a good way to stay in tune with the feel of the season.

• Warding your home! This can take many forms, such as a witch ball, wind chimes, a rock guardian, or whatever else you see fit!

• Adding charged water to your cleaning supplies can really help intent and usher in the seasons. I like to use solar water with some lemon to welcome in the spring and summer and moon water with some chai spices to welcome in fall and winter.

Yemaya’s Protection

This spell specifically requests that the powerful orisha, Yemaya, grant protection to someone–particularly from lies, gossip, and evil speech. USA Southern hoodoo borrows elements for spirit work from a number of sources, including the syncretic religions Vodou, Candomble, and Santeria.

The orisha, Yemaya, is one of the “Seven African Powers.” The orishas are often described as the emissaries of Olodumare, or God Almighty.

Yemaya is the “Mother of All” as such rules the maternal aspects in human lives. She likewise is mistress over the oceans of the earth. All life started in the sea; with Yemaya there is life and hope. She is also known as Yeye Omo Eja means “Mother Whose Children Are Like Fish.” Her many children are uncountable as the fish in the seven seas.

Yemaya lives and rules over the seven seas and large lakes. She is one of the most popular orishas in Santeria. Yemaya’s day is Saturday. Yemaya’s number is seven (or multiples of seven) for the seven seas. She dresses herself in seven skirts of blue and white, thus her colors are blue and white. Her feast days are: February 2, September 7, and Mother’s Day.

The symbols of Yemaya are related to the sea–shells, dolphins, fish. Though she is sometimes depicted as a beautiful woman standing amidst the sea waves or a double tailed mermaid, particularly surrounded by fish, Yemaya is syncretized to at least four manifestations of the Virgin Mary: Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Seafarers, Nuestra Senora La Virgen de Regla, and Maris Stella.

In order to petition Yemaya for her protection with this spell, a person should gather six candles (three white and three blue), seven “silver” colored coins (quarters, dimes, etc), “silver” colored pins, dark molasses, brown wrapping paper, blue pen, and a fish.

After lighting the candles, the person requests protection and writes “whoever seeks to hurt ___” (either “my son,” “mi nina,” “mi enamorado,” “me,” whatever) on a piece of brown wrapping paper. Then s/he rolls up the paper and stuffs it in the fish’s mouth and closes the mouth with the “silver” pins. The fish is placed on a plate and covered with dark molasses, and then wrapped up neatly in the brown wrapping paper. Place the seven coins on the plate around the wrapped fish.

The candles must be lit for seven days.

The fish with the paper inside is eventually tossed into the ocean along with the seven silver coins–apparently after sitting wrapped up on the plate for seven hours.

Yemaya’s offerings should be arranged in an ascetically pleasing manner on a white, blue, or silver plate. Traditionally, her offerings include whole fried fish, molasses (melaco), all kinds of seafood, dried seaweed, lettuce, white wine, white flowers, and watermelon.

It is probably a good idea to pour a glass of white wine to sit with her candles as an offering. At the end of seven days, the wine should be given to Yemaya in the sea.

If someone walks into the ocean waves to greet Yemaya, that person should step into the water sideways with her/his left side pointing towards the waters. This action shows Yemaya that the person respects the orisha’s power and strength.

Prayer for Yemaya: Iya eya ayaba okun oma ire gbogbo awani Iya.

A Protection Pour

A strong protection spell with voodoo elements, to be used to block unwanted magick from coming into your home. Do this spell on the night of the new moon (the dark moon). You’ll need to have:

A cup of pure water (rain is best)
Black ink
4 or 5 black whole peppercorns
A pinch of graveyard dirt
A splash of vodka
A red candle

Light the candle before you begin. Mix everything together in a bowl made from glass, metal or ceramic. Stir everything around with the index finger of your left hand. Call to the voodoo God Legba to protect your house.

Go out to your front door, and pour the mixture all over the steps or walkway coming up to the door. Splash it around good. You can continually refresh the spell by pouring out a new shot of vodka over the same area each night of the new moon.

How to Make Your Own Symbols for Shielding & Warding

Safety is the 2nd base on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs pyramid model. Only second to physiological needs like water, clothing and food. Therefore, safety is key to our survival as human beings. It’s also crucial for us to feel whole as individuals – feeling protected allows us to focus on other needs like love and self esteem. So how can magick support one of our basic human requirements like protection? In many ways, and especially when we put our energetic intentions into it. Here we show you how to design your own protection sigil for spiritual shielding, warding and banishing purposes.
First, Why Do We Need Spiritual Protection?
Just as we need a home in which to live and be shielded from the elements, we also need spiritual protection in a world with chaotic energies lurking behind every corner. This is especially true for people who engage in spiritual and magical practices like shamans, healers, witches, empaths, psychics, mediums, and magical practitioners of all kinds. We tend to pick up energies from all around us easily including other people’s energy as well as energy from animals, events, weather patterns, seasons and moon phases. We feel spirits around us. This means we may unknowingly absorb these energies – both good and bad. Setting up spiritual shields is just one part of the protection process, but one that is often forgotten.
How A Sigil Protects You
So how does it work, exactly? Do you just draw or paint a protection sigil and boom, you’re protected? There’s a little more behind the magical mechanics of symbols. First, the intention must be there. Then the creation process which literally pulls the energy from the ether (be it through gods, ancestors, guides or the Universe). Finally, the activation and use of that sigil in alignment with your intentions. The entire creation process draws energy into the sigil…the thought, movement, and use is what fuels the symbol into action. These symbols can be used to ward off negative energies, evil spirits, hexes, the evil eye, illness, and bad luck.
Next, What is a Protection Sigil, exactly?
Put simply, a protection sigil is a symbol that you create with the intention to protect yourself, others, or a specific space. Sigils have been used for centuries to represent specific deities, invoke spirits, and delineate sacred space. In modern times, chaos magic makes frequent use of sigil creation which has trickled into the witchcraft community at large. But creating one’s own personal power symbols is no new tactic. Consider bindrunes, for example. Runes that are combined with other runes into one symbol based on the practitioner’s needs or desires. As mentioned before, we use protection sigils to ward, banish, bind, and shield (all different forms of protection magick).
How to Make Protection Sigils
While you can use protective sigils you’ve found online or in a book, it’s always most potent to create your own. There’s different ways to do this. One way is to take common pagan symbols and turn them into a protection sigil for yourself. For example, drawing a cross with the rune Algiz and encircling the symbol. Each symbol within this sigil carries its own unique vibrations. Another way is to make bindrunes, which we’ll go into in detail in the next section. And the third way, which is based on chaos magic, is to combine letters of a word that defines your intention to create the sigil. Which is what we demonstrate below:
What You’ll Need:
Pencil
Eraser
Paper
Optional: paint and paintbrush, oils, markers, etc.
How to Draw Your Protection Sigil
Gather your supplies
Get into a relaxed, open state (via music, drumming, incense, candlelight, etc.) and call in your guides/gods/angels/ancestors (whomever you work with in magickal space)
At the top of your paper, write (in pencil) the letters P R O T E C T I O N
Visualize, sing, chant (whatever method you prefer) your intentions for this sigil. If I can’t visualize, I enjoy chanting or singing my intentions out loud. Continue to visualize/sing/chant throughout the entire process.
Next, cross out all of the vowels (a, e, i, o, u), so that you’re left with P R T C T N
Following, I also prefer to cross out any repetitive letters. In this case, we’ll cross out the second T so we are left with P R T C N
Cross out the vowels and any repetitive letters

Lastly, combine the letters P R T C N into one symbol. Sometimes the sigil will flow immediately, while other times it might take you a few sketches to get it right. Don’t be discouraged if you have to erase anything or start over, etc. Let the energy flow and the sigil will follow. (see our example below). Note: I don’t recommend erasing your letters at the top of the page. These serve as your initiation of the ritual. You may erase your sigil sketches, if you’d like.
Once your sigil is created, meditate on it for a little while (look at it, soften your gaze, let it speak to you, be open to any messages)
Then thank the energies present and, at this point, you may solidify the sigil with paint, oil, marker, etc. (this is optional but I feel it adds to the energy and pushes your intentions into the ether further).
My final protection sigil is bottom right.
How to Make Protective Bindrunes
I’ve known quite a few people to go online and pull bindrunes off the screen for use in life and magick. I don’t recommend this. The reason being – runes are an extremely personal journey. They’re not just a form of divination, ancient alphabet, or symbols you find online. Runes are a form of communication with the divine. They’re a map to our wyrd (fate) and to the other realms. They’re not to be taken lightly. Each rune speaks to the individual similar to a friend speaking to a friend. What a rune means to me might mean something else entirely to you. Therefore, crafting your own personal bindrunes is best. And they serve as protective sigils, of sorts.
I look at bindrunes as a combination of symbols, but they’re even more powerful than that. As each rune is drawn, you are literally binding each rune to the next. Binding the power into one symbol. One bindrune. One rune is potent…but three or four together as one? Dynamic!
What You’ll Need:
Pencil
Eraser
Paper
Optional: paint and paintbrush, oils, markers, etc. (I highly recommend red paint or marker to finish the bindrune)
Book of runes or other resource showing all runes (as a reference)
How to Draw Your Protection Bindrune
A bindrune I created
Gather your supplies
Get into a relaxed, open state (via music, drumming, incense, candlelight, etc.) and call in your guides/gods/angels/ancestors (whomever you work with in magickal space)
Choose 2 to 4 runes that represent protection to you.
Draw your protective runes individually at the top of your paper, visualizing, chanting or singing your intentions as you draw.
Next, work to combine your runes into one symbol, also called a bindrune. As you draw each rune, say their name out loud and your intentions. Again, if you have to sketch the bindrune a few times to get it right, that’s totally okay! The energy you’re putting into this sigil is what matters.
Once your bindrune is created, meditate on it for a little while (look at it, soften your gaze, let it speak to you, be open to any messages)
Then thank the energies present and, at this point, you may solidify the bindrune with paint, oil, marker, etc. (this is optional but I feel it adds to the energy and pushes your intentions into the ether further). I recommend using red paint or marker, as red is traditional for runes.
Ways to Use Your Protection Sigil
Use your protection sigil any way you’d like. When I create sigils, I carve them into candles, paint them in my grimoire, and draw them nearly everywhere. Some practitioners use their protection sigils on a daily basis by drawing it on their skin, the bottom of their shoes, or even embroidering it into their favorite jacket or pair of jeans. If your symbol was created to protect your home, draw or paint it and hang it by the front door. When you perform your cleansing and warding ritual, draw your sigil (with your finger and a bit of oil) on the doorframes, window sills, and any other entrances to the home. The same can be done for businesses.
In addition, inscribing your protection sigil on your pet’s collar shields your pet from harm. Keep your sigil in your vehicle to protect you in your travels. Protection sigils can even be used to banish negative energy. This is a form of protection but takes a different action. When you go to create your protection sigil, use words like BANISH or GO AWAY. The words and letters that make up your sigil should match your intention. Then paint or use the sigil in a banishing ritual on your candle, in a floor wash, etc.

Defensive Magick

This, again, is mostly for working with nature spirits, ghosts, and daemons. Make sure you know what you are doing, and do not start something first. Although you might feel threatened, it does not mean they are malicious or trying to hurt you. Test the energy first, and if you are unwelcomed, leave. You do not want to be powerless against something much, much more powerful than yourself, and you definitively do not want to start something with an entity much more powerful than yourself. This is a last resort.
Keep your magickal space clean. Smudge it regularly to get rid of negativity. Nature spirits do not like unclean areas, especially earth spirits. They will take your things and hide them, or they will disappear altogether. Place protective symbols on your doors, windows, and mirrors. Look into hoodoo and voodoo floor washes if you can, and keep it tidy and looking neat. Recharge your area regularly.
Keep an open-mind. Some spirits just down right hate humans, but have valuable lessons to tell and can be interesting to see as to why they hate us so much. Others like to help and guide us, and can shed new light on situations or turn them around completely. Some may have a very strong dark energy that you might not fully understand, or some may intimidate you. Sometimes a deity will not be what you are expecting, and can frighten you, but remember: they do not go by our human morals or ethics, for they are not of this plane or humanly world.
Be gracious. Give thanks to them, if they were willing to talk or make their presence known. Even if they do not, thank them for listening. Don’t forget about them and put them on the ‘back burner’ because that may infuriate them.

Gypsy Protection Spell

The Gypsies placed great value in the power of cards. This simple spell was used to protect the family from those wishing them harm. On the face side of the ace of spades, the person’s name is written in red ink. On top of this, place a black candle and three black crow feathers. At midnight, before the moon turns new, light the black candle and chant the following:

Let there be no delusion,

You are bound by confusion.

I now send you on your way,

Far from me you shall stay.

When the candle has burned out, bind the card with red and black thread. Take to the nearest crossroads and bury. The intention is to cause confusion in the victim’s life so he or she will no longer be a bother to you.

Breaking A Spell With A Spell

This is known as a counter spell, or the kind of spell that can break any spell that may have gotten cast on you. It is always best to cast this during a waning moon. While it is not completely necessary, a lot of people consider a waning moon spell to be double the power as a spell that is cast at any other time.

You Will Need:

Black candle and candle holder

– Cauldron (or a large pot)

In order to prepare your spell, put the candle in the cauldron and fill with water until the candle sits just above the water line. Only leave the wick and a small portion of the candle above the water (roughly a centimeter to half an inch is good).

Cast the circle and call your guides. God, Goddesses and any deities that you want to call on to help break the spell. Now light your candle, staring into the flame. Repeat the following words:

As water meets fire, the spell is come undone.

As water meets fire, the spell is now broken.

As water meets fire, I am free.

Blessings to the Gods (Goddesses), so mote it be.

While you are saying these words, you can imagine that the spell being broken, seeing yourself from the influence. Stare right into the flame, keeping the visualization. Stare until the flame reaches the water and then extinguishes. Once the fire goes out, know that the spell is broken.

After the spell is finished, dig a hole into the ground, burying the candle. Pour the remaining water over the earth. This will then break the spell break the spell for you, allowing you to know it is so. Should the spell seem to be placed on you again, you can simply go through and repeat this same spell as outlined.

How To Cast A Circle Of Protection

One of the most important aspects of Ritual Magick, as practiced by Wiccans and other neo-pagans, is the art of the sacred circle. Circles can serve many purposes, but are most commonly protective. Many types of more advanced Ritual Magick requires one to first cast a circle of protection in order to ward off evil forces from influencing the spell.

To cast a circle of protection, follow these steps carefully to ensure that your protection is adequate.

The first step to casting a circle, or indeed any Ritual Magick, is to find a suitable location. Rituals must be done in a psychologically safe space; if the caster does not feel safe, the Magick will not function. More advanced practitioners can cast in places that are more exposed, but for a beginner, it is best to find someplace isolated. Inside your home can be perfect, or you may feel more at ease outside. Just make sure to find someplace free of interruptions, where you will not be nervous.

After you have your ritual location staked out, it is time to purify the area. Start with physical purification; that is, tidy up. If it is in your home, get the room clean and in order. Put books on shelves, clear clutter, take out the trash. If it is outdoors, make an area of clear ground free of leaves, rocks, and twigs.

After physical purification is complete, cleanse the area spiritually. In most practices, this is a meditative process which involves visualizing spiritual impurities and pushing them away physically. If your practice involves a catalyst, such as a wand, staff, charm, or broom, use this to aid you. Some ritual practitioners use purifying elements such as witch hazel oil or burning sage to aid in the purification process.

Once the area for the ritual is prepared, it is helpful for some practitioners to mark the intended area. While advanced practitioners can often get by without physical markers, beginners often find it helpful to have a physical, visual boundary to focus on. Most ritual circles are as wide as the practitioner is tall, though powerful casters can make them larger, and it is not too difficult to make it smaller if desired.

To demarcate an area for the circle, any material is acceptable. A circle of stones, one drawn in chalk, sprinkled salt, or even a loop of rope arranged in a circle are all perfectly fine. Remember that the physical element is to help the caster focus; no Magick is channeled through the markings, so they can be anything that you find helpful.

Next, place candles at each cardinal direction. In a circle of protection, candles are used at each compass point to represent Earth in the North, Air in the East, Water in the West, and Fire in the South. In some practices, the candles are replaced with things that represent each element; for example, incense for air, a vial of water for water, salt or stone for earth, and of course, a candle or other burning object for fire.

Once your candles or objects are ready, it is time to cast the circle. Begin by blessing the space. If you are using candles, you will walk in a circle lighting each in turn, while leaving a trail of salt along the boundary of the circle. If you are not using candles, trace the outside of the circle anyway, and stop at each cardinal point. Either way, bless the spirits of each direction as you reach it; many practitioners like to do this with an incantation, such as “I bless the spirits of the East” and so on for each point.

Once the circle has been blessed, continue walking around the circle three times, stating the purpose of the circle. Since you are trying to cast a circle of protection, you will say “protect this space,” or whatever feels natural to you, as you walk. After the third rotation, the circle of protection will be complete.

Once your circle has been cast, you can enjoy your safe space or use it for further rituals. Circles of protection are necessary for most dealings with the spirit world, since negative spirits can interfere and cause havoc if left unchecked. To be safe, it is best to always cast a circle of protection as a minimum protective measure.
